X-Files Star Amanda Peet Speaks Out Against Anti-Vaccine Autism Groups
Posted on Friday, July 18 @ 09:25:33 EDT by
Asperger's in the News
X-Files: I Want to Believe star Amanda Peet has spoken out against the "fringe medical groups and parent advocacy groups who claim that vaccines cause autism, or that they have too many "toxins," or "viral challenges" for our tiny babies' bodies to handle." In an article in Cookie Magazine, Peet is quoted saying "Frankly, I feel that parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasites."

Peet's comments are consistent with the medical community's growing concern that parents will not vaccinate their children out of a false fear that such vaccinations could cause Autism. Scientific studies have repeatedly found no link between vaccines and Autism and parents' fears to vaccinate their children are leading to outbreaks in the United States. Thiomersal, which contains mercury, was largely removed from vaccines a couple of years ago and the rate of autism diagnoses has continued to increase.

Read on for more information and links.

Peet's comments are significant because she is one of the first celebrities to speak out against the pseudoscientific approach taken by a number of autism organizations. Much like the Scientology cult, these anti-vaccine fringe groups heavily rely on celebrity endorsements to convince individuals to get on board. 'Stars' such as Jenny McCarthy are responsible for much of the press coverage given to these fringe autism groups.

Peet responded to an organized campaign of letter writing spurred by a blog sympathetic to the anti-vaccine movement. She apologized for using the term parasite, although she did not back down from her denouncement of anti-vaccine groups' pseudoscientific claims. In her response, Peet states that "it's irresponsible to suggest that virtually the entire medical community, and the CDC, and the American Academy of Pediatrics are behind a massive cover-up about vaccine safety."

Peet points out that due to fears of vaccines, there have been outbreaks of deadly diseases such as measles in the United States. How many outbreaks will it take before these fringe groups realize exactly the extent to which their campaigns of fear are irresponsible and dangerous to public safety?

Hopefully more celebrities will speak out in defense of public health before enough people begin dying from cured diseases that the public realizes just how dangerous it is not to vaccinate our children.

This article comes from http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/05/sick-monkeys-st.html SICK MONKEYS: RESEARCH LINKS VACCINE LOAD, AUTISM SIGNS Sick_monkey_2BY DAN OLMSTED The first research project to examine effects of the total vaccine load received by children in the 1990s has found autism-like signs and symptoms in infant monkeys vaccinated the same way. The study's principal investigator, Laura Hewitson from the University of Pittsburgh, reports developmental delays, behavior problems and brain changes in macaque monkeys that mimic "certain neurological abnormalities of autism." The findings are being reported Friday and Saturday at a major international autism conference in London. Although couched in scientific language, Hewitson's findings are explosive. They suggest, for the first time, that our closest animal cousins develop characteristics of autism when subjected to the same immunizations – such as the MMR shot -- and vaccine formulations – such as the mercury preservative thimerosal -- that American children received when autism diagnoses exploded in the 1990s. The first publicly reported results of this research project come in both oral and poster presentations on Friday and Saturday at the International Meeting For Autism Research in London. Poster presentations must go through a form of peer review before they are presented at the conference; the papers have not yet appeared in a scientific journal. In addition to Hewitson's oral presentation today, on Saturday in one of two related poster presentations, the researchers also are reporting in their abstract that "vaccinated animals exhibited progressively severe chronic active inflammation [in gastrointestinal tissue] whereas unexposed animals did not. We have found many significant differences in the GI tissue gene expression profiles between vaccinated and unvaccinated animals." Numerous scientific studies, as well as many parents, report severe GI ailments in children with regressive autism. The results are sure to be controversial, in part because they lend credence to studies first published in 1998 by British pediatric gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, one of Hewitson's co-authors on these findings. He described an unusual inflammatory bowel condition in children who had regressed into autism after they received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination. Wakefield is currently fighting charges of medical misconduct in Britain over allegations of conflict-of-interest and improper procedures related to that paper. He denies the charges. In the program for the conference, the 7th Annual International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR), there are three separate presentations listed that report results from the overall research program. The first, an oral presentation entitled "Pediatric Vaccines Influence Primate Behavior, and Amygdala Growth and Opioid Ligand Binding" (the "amygdala abstract") was led by Dr. Hewitson and lists 12 co-authors, including five of her colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Wakefield. Other authors are chemists, pathologists and psychologists from the universities of Kentucky, California-Irvine, and Washington. Hewitson's introductory presentation will be followed by two poster presentations on Saturday; one of the two, "Pediatric Vaccines Influence Primate Behavior, and Brain Stem Volume and Opioid Ligand Binding", was led by Wakefield and includes six additional co-authors. It focuses on the developmental effect of vaccine exposures on brain growth during infancy. The second, "Microarray Analysis of GI Tissue in a Macaque Model of the Effects of Infant Vaccination," was led by Steven Walker of Wake Forest University and performed gene array analysis on the intestinal tissues of the vaccinated and unvaccinated monkeys. The studies address – albeit in animals, not children -- one of the major criticisms by parents and scientists concerned about a possible link between the greatly stepped-up immunization schedule in the 1990s, including higher exposure to the mercury preservative, and autism. While the Food and Drug Administration approves individual vaccines as safe and effective, and an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the childhood immunization schedule adopted by the states, the overall health outcomes from the total vaccine load, versus no vaccinations at all, have never been compared, the authors said. A bill requiring the government to conduct a study of autism rates in unvaccinated American children is pending in the U.S. House of Representatives, co-sponsored by Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Tom Osborne (R.-Neb.). Just this week, former National Institutes of Health Director Bernadine Healy called for more research into a possible vaccine link to autism and said the question had not been settled, despite repeated assertions to that effect by the CDC, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In the abstract for today's oral presentation, the authors noted that macaques, the type of monkey used in the study, "are commonly used in pre-clinical vaccine safety testing, but the combined childhood vaccine regimen, rather than individual vaccines, has not been studied. Childhood vaccines are a possible causal factor in autism, and abnormal behaviors and anomalous amygdala growth are potentially inter-related features of this condition." The study found evidence of both behavioral and biological changes after the 13 macaque monkey infants were administered proportional doses, adjusted for age, of the vaccines recommended between 1994 and 1999. Three monkeys were not given any vaccines. "Primate development, cognition and social behavior were assessed for both vaccinated and unvaccinated infants using standardized tests developed at the Washington National Primate Research Center." MRI and PET scans looked for brain changes after administration of the MMR. "Compared with unexposed animals, significant neurodevelopmental deficits were evident for exposed animals in survival reflexes, tests of color discrimination and reversal, and learning sets," the authors reported. "Differences in behaviors were observed between exposed and unexposed animals and within the exposed group before and after MMR vaccination. Compared with unexposed animals, exposed animals showed attenuation of amygdala growth and differences in the amygdala binding of [11C]diprenorphine. Interaction models identified significant associations between specific aberrant social and non-social behaviors, isotope binding, and vaccine exposure." One of the Saturday abstracts makes the further point that the research "revealed significant differences between exposed and unexposed animals" in the kinds of developmental behaviors a mother might be able to observe, "with delayed acquisition of root, suck, clasp hand, and clasp foot reflexes." They conclude by noting that "This animal model examines the neurological consequences of the childhood vaccine regimen, Functional and … brainstem anomalies were evident in vaccinated animals that may be relevant to some aspects of autism. The findings raise important safety issues while providing a potential animal model for examining aspects of causation and disease pathogenesis in acquired neurodevelopmental disorders." -- Dan Olmsted is Editor of Age of Autism.

The lead researcher was first shunned, then fired for this ridiculous assertion. If you believe such an extraordinary claim, based on such poor research, then your brain is not firing on all cylinders! Such appalling claims are not new in this field. I don't care how famous a person is fame does not influence my opinions (it does however peeve me this woman used X-Files to spread personal messages - lucky casting call) I much prefer facts leaned from research & or life experience. I'm not a scientist nor do I know the definitive answer to this aging topic. I do know two things, #1) My sister & I both were inoculated against whooping cough as small children, within the week we both came down with serious cases of the infection - the shot gave us the infection. Neither of us were able to shake it for two long years, my mother has recordings of us singing & playing while coughing. #2) My mum had an inoculation for the seasonal flu bug & within the week came down with a very bad case of the flu, she was ill for three weeks - the shot gave her the flu. My family has not had shots since. People who do not vaccinate are not parasites. My family leans to the the holistic approach. The human body is an amazing self-righting machine when kept healthy & looked after. Good diet & taking care of yourself prevents the spreading of disease just as well (if not better in our case) as any shot. For the record if you track the history of the break-out of disease (in europe from my tracking) you will learn that there were great numbers of families (genetic-links) that were naturally immune to the disease's striking towns & villages. I was very interested in that topic when I was back in high school, it's worth reading up on yourselves if interested. Educate yourself.

My first son had an immediate reaction to his MMR shot as a toddler and is now an individual with AS. Before my next child was born I read 4 books on the topic of vaccinations and my husband and I made an informed, educated decision not to vaccinate any of our other three children (all NT). There are reasons other than the question of Autism that factor in to a decision not to vaccinate. One example: Chicken Pox and Measles are both diseases that are tolerated by healthy children and serve as building blocks to an individual's immune system. Does Amanda Peet know why Silver Nitrate is dropped into her newborn's eyes? Does she know that the Vitamin K shot given at birth is stored in her baby's fat and is administered at a dosage that does not consider adjusting for the baby's weight? Does she ever consider why so many children today have life threatening allergies and what factors into the steep rise in childhood autoimmune disorders? She may just be an individual who is comfortable letting others make decisions for her and her family. Parents are responsible to make healthcare choices for their children and Amanda Peet has no business making judgements on these choices.

Just a disinformation campaign will do. Nice help you gave them. I'll never watch another Peet film, if there are any more coming out, that is. She should also read more about vaccines. Forget autism/mercury, for a moment. There are so many other cases of vaccines that have caused damage or even killed people quickly after being administered. Why would an infant's system be prepared for such an onslaught? Even in vaccine form that is a dangerous cocktail to pump into an immature immune system. And there is research that seems to link chronic fatigue and other autoimmune illnesses to polio vaccinations. In essence polio may have mutated due to all the vaccinations into a more subtle form with similar muscle weakness, only the onset is typically adulthood/middle age, not childhood. She just sounds ill informed at best.

Nothing to do with autism, nothing to do with Aspergers, nothing to do with Wakefield. This is about our children, their immune systems, and their health. And there certainly isn't any pseudo-science or 'fringe movement' here either. Tell me, why is it that, for example, in New Zealand, since the introduction of the wonder-vaccine against meningitis was introduced a few years ago, the only children to have died from the disease were ones who had been vaccinated, with not one death to speak of in an unvaccinated person?

The influenza vaccine is an example. The Gulf War Syndrome is directly correlated with the battery of vaccinations given the Amercan troops that went over. The allied troops didn't get any vaccinations and didn't have the Gulf War Syndrome. There are numerous cheerful infants who are speaking words and are potty trained who suddenly become autistic a day after getting a vaccination. The Amish have a religious exemption from vaccinations. They have no cases of autism. They adopted two children who had been given their shots and became autistic. @n4mwd While it's fine for you to believe that vaccines made your autism worse, personal accounts are not scientifically sound. The problem is that there is no scientific basis to the theory that vaccines cause autism and these fringe groups are claiming that there is. Arguing that there are lots of personal accounts of a link and that these cases are proof of a possible correlation demonstrates a lack of understanding of the scientific method.

Is that the Kate Harding who does Shapely Prose, I wonder? I basically agree with what Amanda Peet is saying, but I'm uncomfortable with the way she's using "weirdo fringe" status as a way to invalidate the concerns of the vaccine believers. They may be wrong about this one particular thing, but a general distrust of the infallibility of authority figures is--although stressful--pretty much necessary. Mainstream medical establishments have put forth all kinds of horrible wrongheaded poisonous crap, and there's no reason to believe that at THIS point they have everything all figured out. That kind of attitude encourages people to invalidate others (and themselves) for behaviors, attitudes, and conditions that are outside the (perceived) norm. That's not useful at all! A simple "they're wrong" (along with evidence) should be enough if they really are wrong--ad hominem attacks just make you look like you have no real evidence.

This is complicated for me as although I am certain that vaccines do not cause autism, I do think that the benefits of vaccines (and other health risks excluding autism), especially with relatively harmless diseases like measles, are exagerrated. For true dangerous diseases like polio, I have no qualms of vaccination. But measles? Every child had this when I was young and not one suffered any complications. I knew children who drowned, got run over, and died falling off waterfalls while on holiday. But nobody died of measles, chicken pox, whooping cough or mumps. I agree with this article: http://www.thinktwice.com/measles.htm The real danger is not measles, but malnutrition due to poverty. As it says "African needs vitamin A more than they need vaccines right now".

I don't believe that Thiomersal causes autism, but I can most certainly vouch for the fact that it is still toxic to certain people. I get sick for days and sometimes weeks after a vaccine with it. Flu shots and tetanus shots still use it. It was also formerly used in things like nasal spray. That being said, its entirely possible for someone that already has autism to get worse, at least temporarily, after getting it in a shot. I'm one of those people.
