Disability Community Responds to Hateful Comments by Michael Savage
Posted on Thursday, July 24 @ 11:51:07 EDT by
NTs in denial As many of you have already heard, this past week talk radio personality Michael Weiner, better known on the air as Michael Savage, made several outrageous remarks in regards to autism, including, "Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket…I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."

Remarks like these spread ignorance about autism and threaten to return us to a previous era where parents were blamed and labeled as "refrigerator mothers" for having autistic children. Not only have Michael Weiner and Talk Radio Networks refused to retract these outrageous comments - they have added to them by claiming, unsupported by science of any kind, that the autism spectrum is an overdiagnosed medical condition. This is part of a broader pattern of statements attacking people with disabilities and our families.

Wrong Planet has joined a coalition of disability rights organizations calling for the sponsors of Talk Radio Networks and the Savage Nation to pull their support. Read on for the joint letter regarding Savage's remarks.

To Sponsors of The Savage Nation Radio Show, Syndicate of Talk Radio Networks, and sponsors of Talk Radio Networks programming:

We, organizations representing people with disabilities, family members, professionals and other concerned citizens, are calling upon you to withdraw support for Talk Radio Networks in response to the outrageous comments by TRN personality Michael Alan Weiner, also known as Michael Savage.

On July 16th, Weiner announced: “Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I’m not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket…You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is…What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

These comments represent dangerous misinformation. The refusal by Talk Radio Networks to condemn the comments or undertake any steps in response to them, as well as Michael Savage’s refusal to apologize, is absolutely unacceptable. The autism spectrum is a very real developmental disability affecting millions of Americans. It includes a series of impairments in social interaction and communication, executive functioning, sensory processing, and motor skills. Adults and children on the autism spectrum often require substantial supports, services and education across the lifespan. Comments like those on the Savage Nation do real damage to autistic people by increasing public ignorance and misinformation about autism, thereby putting at risk vital education, supports and services. Contrary to the remarks by Mr. Weiner, there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that autism is over diagnosed – in fact, research suggests that there is substantial under-identification of the autism spectrum, resulting in a lack of vitally needed services and education. In addition, these remarks revive outdated and damaging misconceptions about the source of autism, recalling the “refrigerator mother” myth in which parents were blamed for having autistic children.

Talk Radio Networks’ sponsors must consider whether or not to associate with the hateful and offensive comments spoken by Michael Weiner. Because TRN has taken no action, we urge you to communicate the need for Mr. Weiner’s immediate removal by withdrawing sponsorship for TRN’s programming. There are over 50 million people with disabilities in the United States, representing approximately $200 billion in disposable income. We represent a market that cannot be ignored. By disassociating your businesses from the ignorant and hateful remarks made this past week and taking practical steps to help educate the public about the true nature of the autism spectrum and other disabilities, we can move forward towards creating a world that will recognize the rights of all people to respect, dignity, support and inclusion.

As a result of this continued attack against autistic people and the broader disability community, the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network has joined with over a dozen national and regional disability rights organizations to call on the sponsors of Talk Radio Networks and the Savage Nation to pull their support. Together, we have issued a strong joint statement calling for an ad boycott. In addition, we've collected contact information for several of the major sponsors of Talk Radio Networks in order to empower our community to take further action. We urge you to use the information below to write, call and e-mail these sponsors and tell them why it is imperative they join companies like Aflac and Telesouth Communication that have already pulled their ads in response to these hateful remarks. There are over 50 million people with disabilities in the United States with approximately $200 billion in disposable income. It is time for us to make our voices heard.

Below you will find contact information for Talk Radio Networks' largest sponsors and a sample letter for you to use as a reference point in your e-mails and phone calls. We will be keeping an updated list on our website here and will post updates and changes to contact information as new information becomes available. In addition, if you would like to express your support for the disability community's joint statement on this issue, you can do so by signing our petition here. Please distribute this message to your networks and feel free to repost.

Sample Letter:

"To Whom It May Concern:

As a member of the disability community, I am outraged by the recent comments made by Talk Radio Networks' host Michael Alan Weiner, also known as Michael Savage, stating that autism is "a fraud...a racket...In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is." Not only have these comments not been retracted but Talk Radio Networks continues to stand by Michael Weiner as he continues spreading public misinformation about autism. Autism is a very real developmental disability affecting millions of Americans. Public ignorance and prejudice against people with disabilities represent one of the most significant obstacles to full access and inclusion of people with disabilities throughout society. I urge you to take immediate action and pull your financial support from Talk Radio Networks and The Savage Nation Radio Show in response to these hateful comments."

Whatr Michael Savage said about children with autism is unforgivable. So much for a man who has a doctorate degree in medicine!I can't believe that the American public allow such hateful comments. But if question a Republican politician, you'll be eaten alive by the lemmings.I'm American, and don't like the direction its headed too. Another thing,a man told that if someone goes to a university, you'll be well educated and a liberal. That's complete nonsense.

Yeah, I would just like to say that I pity Michael Savage's ignorance about autism in general. My dad had nothing to do with my being autistic. I had had a series of ear infections when I was six years old. Mr. Savage's ill-informed remarks remind me of the various taunts that I had endured in elementary school. For someone who supposedly has a doctorate in medicine, Mr. Savage isn't so bright.

Quite frankly, I think Michael Savage had a point. A few years ago, dyslexia was the trendy disease for middle-class parents to get their children diagnosed with, hence the saying that it was middle class for thick. Now, autism is unfortunately becoming the "in" disease and is often middle-class for badly behaved. All these silly middle class parents are diverting attention away from the people on the autistic spectrum who really do need assistance to help them reach their potential in life. As with many of the posters on this forum, I myself have Asperger's syndrome. However, I don't believe Michael Savage's comments really have any significance or effect. Furthermore, I am a libertarian and therefore I think it is his right to promulgate hate speech if he wants to.

Kind of late, but I wasn't a member of wrongplanet until now. Oh well. Part of the job description for being a shock jock is pissing people off. that's just part of the job. If anything, he deserves a raise for doing such a good job at it. I think it's remarkable how people took him so seriously. I'm autistic, I know he wasn't doing it because he thought it was true, all of the parents of autistic kids were up in arms over it. Seems like the NT's are becoming more autistic by the day. As to the content, I think he's totally wrong and that if fewer people watch his show that will suck for him, but I would still feel bad for him if he loses his job over this, because other people won't hire him so he'll basically have his life ruined over one rant. nobody deserves that.

Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.” Later on in the interview, he discusses how he feels it is abusive to diagnose a young child with the disorder; due to the frequency of misdiagnosis in children under age 5 or 8, I have to agree with him. I think it's funny that shrinks try to diagnose children with age 2 with bi-polar disorder. Every two year old takes tantrums. It could be an indicator though that 1) the mother or father is inpatient with the child or 2) that they have bi-polar disorder themselves and their child doesn't 3) the medication the child does take for that disorder morphs into something similar to that disorder or 4) it would have been found out later that the child did have it. Sometimes the most controversial statements are also the most correct. Diagnosing people with Asperger's or as autistic is as profitable as plastic surgery. Many doctors don't take insurance or evaluations are not covered by insurance so they obtain full reimbursement instead of 31% reimbursement. Also, if it is misdiagnosed, a parent may have spent $10,000 for nothing. I think what he's getting at is that the diagnosis could be the result of another disorder (i.e. ADHD, OCD, or bi-polar disorder). I do think that we diagnose children at too young of an age to come up with an accurate diagnosis. For instance, eye contact could be difficult for many reasons: 1) improper diet, 2) a lens higher up in the eye that changes direction, 3) prior complications to a strabismus (cross-eyed) surgery, 4) shyness, 5) an inability to know how to make eye contact, or 6) an unwillingness to do so. Also, you have many gifted quiet people out there without Aspergers (who are in Silicon Valley) and many outgoing people with it. I think that getting social skills training is something that can be done outside of school. I don't think it should be an in-school exercise. I think that many children with NLD or Aspergers benefit from this therapy and there's something amiss even if they are undiagnosed. I think of Michael Weiner lives by a corporal punishment model and believes that if you allow yourself to spank, that it will fix problems related to ADHD. While radical, I think he sincerely believes that and he had a book called Curing Children Naturally back in 1983. I think this is one where we should agree to disagree rather than taking a "fit" that he stated those comments; that's being a true adult in being able to empathize with his point of view. When you are tough on someone, but having a loving soul, it allows the child to develop their full potential; those with Autism/Asperger's can act with more tact and more intelligence, but just need to be taught how to do so. He also said that anyone who is really autistic or Aspergers should get all the services they need. He provided a true wake-up call on the overdiagnosis of the flavor of the month.

It's a bit drastic to have him kicked off the air for this isn't it? Is the First Amendment becoming a little inconvenient? I have heard this piece of his live on the air within its original context and find some of his points on the "autism racket" worth checking out. It is unfortunate and sad that this kind of ignorance (not necessarily hatred) still goes on in the world today. Probably the biggest reason that people with autism or Asperger's don't make it to their dreams in this world is because they have a crisis along the way and someone who doesn't understand the disorder, or simply chooses not to, has them thrown out of school or worse over something done during this crisis. I only wish that people would think about what they say before they say it... not doing this gets so many of us, Aspie and Neurotypical alike into grave trouble.

Certainly, in the game of life, the way some people play can lead to other people having to enjoy death, discomfort, or a shortage the imaginary game token known as money. Yes, his comments make me feel a bit pissed off and turn my stomach a bit but that's how I'm reminded that I'm a true player of the game because it's my entire beings' way of reminding me which side I'm on. Mike's side? My Side? The autistic team? Whichever, you have to pick a side to play. To refuse to pick a side is just plain ignorant, because you'd really be joining the 'No side for me please' side and not even realising you're on a side! This side and that side are intrinsic to each other. No day without night, no black without white, no (neurological) disorder without order. REAL trouble happens when people play without the spirit of the game. If you really do think that your side is right and the other is wrong, you might be tempted to try to eradicate the other side, rather than just joyfully playing war with them. (Would the US please stop the silly war against the enemies of 'freedom!). And what happens if white does succeed in destroying black? White divides into a thousand shades of gray, with the darkest becoming the new black, and the fighting or playing just carries on. If you want to know more about this way of looking at things, it's just eastern philosophy. Hinduism if you like. Philosopher Alan Watts does a very good job of explaining this stuff to western heads. I note with some amusement that another discussion is defending a 14 year old girl's right to have free speech on her T-shirts. If she can attack the evil empire (Autism speaks), then why can't Mike attack the rebel alliance? All this world is but a play, be thou the joyful player!

I listen to Michael Savage irregularly, but I actually rather like him. I wouldn't want his to be the only media voice, but I'm glad it's there, challenging us -- challenging *me* -- not to whine, to soldier on when I feel I'm in danger of falling. Sure, he'll sometimes say things that make me cringe, but later he'll say something I think needs to be said, and nobody else will say it. I've heard him comment, for example, that Ritalin is over-prescribed, and we're turning our normal kids that need parental attention into zombies so we can ignore them. When I hear something like what's quoted here, I take it in the same context: That we're building mechanical systems to deal with problems that require a human solution. Maybe a parent is needed, or a friend, or some inner wherewithal, rather than a drug or a social worker. Okay, some of you won't want to be so generous in your interpretation, and that's okay. I don't really want to argue, because it won't be productive. I don't claim to speak for anybody but myself. The question of what we each need is a very personal one. But on behalf of myself, I'll say I'm not afraid of being challenged by Savage.

People who are that ignorant don't deserve anger. They deserve pity. The world is full of those who cannot comprehend anything that isn't within their field of sight, and to me those are the ones who truly have a disability. I (as a proud Aspie) work in a public service environment with a wide range of clientele and believe me, I know which ones I think have the 'problems' in this life. Society is just ruled by those short-sighted people who are scared of anything that moves an inch out of line. This is just further representation of that fact. They don't understand us, so they fear us. They fear us so they attack us. They attack us so they feel better. And so the cycle repeats. I'm sure 99% of us have encountered a bully of that nature at some point in the past, right? Yes, it makes me frustrated that someone is stupid enough to actually admit to such backdated opinions on public airwaves and think they're funny or acceptable remarks. I also believe this. Karma bites ^_^ As regards medication, I've always been against medication of any kind for Asperger's Syndrome or Autism. It's not a disease and intelligence and creativity shouldn't be drugged simply because it's misunderstood and therefore feared by those not in the know. But I don't believe that remarks like that - in or out of context - can be justified as an attack on overmedication. I'm not American so I don't know what the general level of medication is. But, erm, I'm rather surprised that someone who is - I presume - thought of as an intelligent, "normal" human being is unable to grasp the most basic rules of diplomatic expression. ergo: You do not make a point by offensively singling out a group of people, attacking them without any due cause or provocation, and levelling judgements at them which have nothing to do with your original subject matter. Surprising, isn't it, when you start to realise that the people in this world who don't have good manners are generally not the ones with the genuine reasons not to have them. It's a shame. But I guess maybe he'll catch on eventually... Apple

Savage is a dumb Fu**k who knows nothing about autism, but he certainly knows how to get a fight going. Personally, I'd write the sponsors. If you hold an American express card, pay it off and tell them why. Then cut it up. Tell Gallo wine that you will buy no more of their product. Remind them that you are in contact with 20,000 plus like minded individuals. 20,000 is a lot of people. They won't take Savage off the air, and I agree that it hurts everyone on the spectrum, but hitting out at the sponsors is the thing to do. Not sending a letter to the show. And by the way, if you can use the phone, call the phone number listed. If you get a secretary who won't put you through, tell them that you plan to call back every hour until the man or woman answers the phone, and you plan to post the fact that they don't want to talk to consumers on an internet bulletin board with 20,000 plus subscribers. That is political action. The network will get the message. In Savage's opinion? Well, what the hell does he know about it? Or maybe he has an autistic kid and hates him or her. Beentheredonethat

I am normally a fan of the Michael Savage show, however, I have to call him out on this one. I really wish what he said on the radio about autism were true, and the treatment is a simple as he said, but it is not. Yes, I know how to act, but I am still autistic, and I am careful about what situations I put myself in. Michael Savage is plainly ignorant on this one topic, and I can understand why he is thinking the way he is thinking. Far too many people in our society like to come up with excuses to escape responsibility for their behavior, and that includes SOME of us autistics. Look at the autistic man who collected the child pornography. He got out of jail, because his lawyer claimed autism was the cause. This DOES NOT look good for our cause. When I broke the law, I did not use my autism to get out of trouble, although I plainly could have. I owned up to my responsibility and took my licks. I really don't want to see Michael Savage thrown off of the air, but I would like to see him get a clue. Maybe when there is a medical test or a physical difference in the brain that can be readily detected will he then understand. Until then, maybe we should show a bit of compassion, and continue to call him out on his ignorance. I don't want to ruin the man, and I believe that he is entitled to express his OPINION. However, in this case, I do believe that he will be proven wrong, and many will call him on it.

Same comments as in the forum post: Alright, enough is enough! If you listen to the Savage Nation Show from the archives on Talk Radio Network, you would realize that the 1 minute rate that was taken by Media Matters was taken out of context over a rant on the over-medication of people by doctors and pharmacutical companies. His opinions have lead to a good debate and there are some nuggets of truth in them. Many people in our society are being over-medicated, even autistics (and if you do not believe that, as Ann Bauer about the situation she had with her son). There is an over diagnosis of quite a few disorders for purposes of extra services and money (and more than autism). Not only that, but Autism Speaks has finally been silenced. His comments have put Autism Speaks in a very bad position. If they support Dr. Savage, they will lose the support of the parents. If they come out against Dr. Savage, then they are saying that they have been attacking those of us who are slightly/moderately affected by autism. Finally, this is still the USA, the constitution still has the 1st amendment, and Dr. Savage is still entitled to his opinion and since the show is his, he can say it. If he is ripped off the air for hate speech, who is next? Can WP be brought down by Autism Speaks simply because we do not support their cause for eugenics? How about AFF, can they be brought down for simply protesting a cause to raise money for children? I would rather a society where Dr. Savage is allowed to speak his mind than a society where everyone must be politically correct. In short, I do hope that the Savage Nation stays on the air and if he does lose sponsers, I hope that new ones take their place. His comments, although they seem hateful, actually help the discourse along and he should be applauded for taking a stand that others seem too scared to take.
