Re: What? Aren't Most Autistics High Functioning? (Score: 1)

Pedantry is good, but we need some wiggle room with these clinical terms, and they are constantly changing anyway, which is as it should be. If autism, generally is about 1 in 300, with 6 billion people in the world, then (by US and scientific use of the term billion, for pedantry!) there are 20,000,000 people on the autism spectrum. My view is that this means there are 20 million types of autism. We just like to group it as best we can for convenience. Have you ever met two autistic people exactly alike? No, neither have I, and you won't because so many other factors come into play, not just IQ. My son was diagnosed quickly as a "textbook" Aspie, but he tells jokes and tries hard to socialize. So many variations.

PDD-NOS is the most common diagnosis; then autism, then Asperger's. PDD-NOS is usually of a lower-functioning level that Asperger's. JosephNV, there's been studies done that prove the diagnosis of AS is accurate when the DSM-IV-TR is applied correctly. The confusion arises when people see that being unable to dress oneself for school as a lack of self-help skills, when in reality the DSM means a severe lack of self-help skills for one's age, i.e., not being able to discern danger as one runs across the road at an age that it should be self-evident that running across the road is dangerous. There's also confusion when individuals don't read the expanded information that outlines how AS manifests compared to autistic disorder without mental retardation.
