Adventures in Online Dating
posted at 10:17 am on 12-30-2007

So I’ve been doing some updating of my various profiles for the New Year and hitting the dating/ social networking sites pretty hard this weekend.

I found an interesting woman in Atlanta. She had a great line in her profile that made me laugh my ass off after I thought about it. “There’s not room on a date for you me and the Lord.” I liked it so much that I lifted it for my own profile. I sent her a message,” I lifted a line from your profile. I hope you don’t mind.” She replied, “Actually, I do.” Removed herself from my favorites list. Wouldn’t add me to her myspace friends list. Well, excuse me!

I met another woman who I’m not personally into, but I think some of you are really going to like her. I was doing interest/keyword searches. I was getting 700+ hits until I used the keyword “sci-fi.” I got like 23 hits, and she was one.

“I aim to assemble a kick-ass team of think tank super heros to theorize on how to improve the world.. err.. something like that. Do you have a super power to contribute? Maybe you have a rare ability to be compassionate, a plan to take over the world, mad skills at fixing technology, great tastes in movies, conquerer of video games, baker of brownies, tracking down spammers, good grammar or other needed skills in our vigilante force? All that is really required is that you believe you have a power to contribute!”

You can see her complete profile here http://www.plentyoffish.com/member610185.htm. Dial her up sometime. Tell her what makes you the geekiest guy in the world. Oh yeah, she’s cute too.

Valentine’s Day
posted at 04:27 am on 02-18-2007

So I gave a young woman a Valentine. The signs seemed right; there seemed to be some mutual interest. It was a simple postcard style thing that said, “Happy Valentine’s Day! Wanna go to a movie?”

It was a nice day so I went for a walk at lunch. Along the way I found a little card of heart stickers. When I got back to the library, I went around sticking them on all the pretty girls I work with. Every one of them giggled without exception. The sound of a woman’s laughter is music to a man’s ears.

So when I gave this young woman the Valentine, she smiled and said, “What movie do you want to see?” It kinda surprised me because I hadn’t thought that far ahead. I said, “Oh, I don’t know.” I think she made some comment about how nice the card was. I wanted to keep it light, no pressure, so I said, “You can get back to me about the movie.” I continued on, sticking hearts on girls.

So then on Friday she seemed to avoid me. She walked through circulation twice and didn’t say hello. Maybe that’s not a bad sign. Maybe she’s still thinking about it.

So you see, when I went around sticking those hearts on girls, expecting nothing in return, it made them smile and giggle. I gave a card hoping for something in return. I hope I haven’t lost something that I had.

ways to give
posted at 02:48 am on 11-22-2006

I’ve come to realize that one of the reasons so many people are unhappy is that their lives are all about what they can get from the world. I have found that I derive a great deal of joy out of making my life about what I can give to the world. I struggle to find more and better ways to give, instead of better ways to get more, and that struggle gives me a great deal of satisfaction.
