New Aspie posted at 03:06 pm on 04-14-2009
Where to begin. Well, I am a newly self and other-diagnosed Aspie. This was brought to my attention by my girlfriend. She has been dealing with her son's AS for about 20 years. I want to stress that I have not been professionally diagnosed. From some research I have done and from my gf's experience I believe I am considered a very high function Aspie. I look forward to being tested in the coming months.
Anyway, it's difficult for me to explain how I came to this conclusion other than, after some research, what I have learned just makes all the pieces fit.
Some details on me:
1) I am a 44 y/o male
2) My IQ is not measurable by standard tests
3) I am a loner, but can also be overly social at times
4) I see things as numerical equations, it's like seeing everything as an ever-changing mosaic
5) I have a preoccupation with numbers on the order of 10
6) I have an obsessive need to figure out everything, and when I stumble on something new that interests me, I absorb the subject completely.
7) I bore the hell out of everybody with detailed descriptions of subjects that they have absolutely no interest in.
8) I don't take social cues well, sometimes not at all.
9) I don't understand the apparently "unwritten rules" of society and social interaction. If these rules are so important why the hell doesn't someone write them down! PLEASE! :-)
That's all for now. All I know is that learning about AS has really put many of the circumstances and events in my life in perspective. I don't see it as a "disability" so much as I do a "different ability".
If anyone thinks that AS is the wrong diagnosis then please POLITELY point me in the right direction. If you know of any resources that may help, please share them with me.
Thanks,
brodeano
