I have a sleep disorder, and it's sort of ruining my life.
I moved into an apartment with concrete walls specifically because I wanted quiet at night.
Well, as it turns out, I have terrible neighbors. I hear them yelling (from the front door) often, and my body's stress response is rather painful.
Normally, it's just in the common area that I can hear the neighbors, since that's where the less-insulated front door is.
I bet you see where this is going...
Last night, at one in the morning, I was trying to sleep, and they were yelling AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS. Even my fancy concrete walls couldn't stop the sheer volume, and my heart was racing from the shock. They were slamming doors and throwing stuff against the walls, too. Percussive noise, isn't stopped by the walls.
Another night's sleep, and by extension, another day, wrecked.
How on earth do people live like this? It isn't even a couple, just two people, one of which is renting out a spare room from the other. They're both friendly to me, and the renter has been in the process of getting kicked out, but until it happens, they're sure making my life miserable.
And, get this, I'm moving out before she does, by about a week... so basically I'll have to put up with it until I leave. It really annoyed me when last month she said she was getting kicked out "on the fifth"... I was thinking it'd be the fifth of this month, but it's next month. So much for having a month of peace before I leave. |

| I can't think of anything constructive to say, I can only say that that sounds really bad. Hope your new place is better. |

| It's hell I know. I've had many a Rambo bazooka fantasy concerning noisy neighbors. The one thing I can suggest is talk to them but don't wait til you're furious. It's hard to talk to someone about something you're angry about when you're not angry at that moment and sometimes you feel you need the anger to get the courage for the "talk". There's less chance you'll say something that's going to start a feud if you say something when you're calm. My downstairs neighbor is directly under my across the hall neighbors, who have loud domestic disputes. I don't hear them. She exploded at the woman and told her her boyfriend belonged in a cage etc. etc.- It didn't accomplish anything but put the woman on the defensive and start another war. |

earplugs.
concrete seems to conduct noise to me, i know the first time i lived in flats with concrete floors i was amazed at how much you hear compared to floorboards, it's like a drum surface and people walking on it reverberates all over the floor below. i could hear the guy upstairs and two flats away at night because he used to pace.
in future i'd avoid concrete if possible, go for the old style double brick walls and floorboards if you can. if not, try for free standing.
if all else fails live on a small acreage. |

I've always found that living on the top floor of apartment buildings is your best bet. Most of the noise usually comes from above. Footsteps, objects being dropped, even cats running back and forth can create a lot of noise through the floorboards.
Why must people talk so loudly? It seems like I always live near neighbors who yell at the top of their lungs, even while talking on the phone. That is my biggest pet peeve: people who talk loudly while on the phone. I mean, hello?? The microphone is right in front of your face, you don't need to project your voice like you're trying to reach the back row of Broadway. |
