It wasn't until recent that I found out it was pronounced, "as-per-gers". I sometimes have a hard time hearing certain combining letters I guess. |
Happened to me, too! but I know how to pronounce it now. Woe to an NT who pronounces it wrong! |

I'd only seen Asperger's written and always pronounced the G as a J. When my mom approached me last night about the syndrome and she used a hard G, my stepfather followed close behind with "Ass burgers!" He's immature.
I tried to mention it today in school and then the only thing I could think about was how it sounded like ass burgers if I tried to say it. o__o I think I'll either just pronounce it wrong or use AS or something to avoid that. As if I need another thing to stumble over while speaking... _________________ Shannon - 17 - Female - Strange Animal Enthusiast - May or may not be an Aspie

I've heard it thousands of times, but really the only thing that irks me about it is when I try to explain Aspergers to people, the ONLY thing they take from it is "you have ass burgers? ahahaha." _________________ Confucius say - Man who stand on toilet high on pot.

I've always done the same. It's moreso when people see it written and pronounce with the "g" sound instead of "j". Fecks me right off. >_< |
I've always said it was a "g" sound because it's named after an Austrian person, isn't it? So the word has its roots in central European language. We don't say "iceberj" or "hamburjer". |

You are correct, Aietra.
I can never understand people who mispronounce the word. It takes very little effort to find out the correct way to say a word (especially when it is a person's name, and the correct way is the way they themselves pronounce it), rather than arbitrarily substitute sounds like a "j" for a "g" and a "b" for a "p"... and even seemingly inserting an "r" before the first "s".
Just to be inconsistent (as English always is), the verb "asperge" does indeed have a "j" sound, like "surge", unlike the hard "g" in "burger" and "Asperger".
There does seem to be (according to the OED) a slight difference in the U.S. pronunciation - which does sound the first "r", whereas elsewhere that is effectively silent.
PS. I also find it odd that people misspell it as "aspergers", rather than "Asperger's" The former would maybe describe several people, each of whom was using an aspergillum to sprinkle of holy water. The latter is the possessive form of Hans' surname name. _________________ "Striking up conversations with strangers is an autistic person's version of extreme sports." Kamran Nazeer |

| I've heard that once or twice. It irritates the hell out of me, but most people use that term out of pure ignorance. I just calmly tell them that Aspergers is a real problem with real implications. |

Is Ass Burger nice?
Other than that, it's sad that I have AS and these people make fun of my conditions... and its names. _________________ Ex amicitia vita |

We could also call it "Social Dyspraxia". _________________ If we had no people with Asperger's Syndrome, we would be losing a very important way of thinking that has helped many people! |

Good idea, I'll use this from now on when repeating myself for the billionth time about my condition. It's fine because no one I run into has ever heard of Asperger's anyway. |
