The Autistic Community mourns the death of Genevieve Edmonds
Posted on Monday, February 18 @ 20:46:15 EST by
Asperger's in the News Washington, DC - 2/18/08 – The autistic community mourned the loss of Genevieve Edmonds, a UK-based advocate and author on the autism spectrum who committed suicide this past week.

Genevieve was a leader in advocating for increased visibility and support for adults on the autism spectrum. She authored four books: The Asperger Social Guide: How to Relate to Anyone in any Social Situation as an Adult with Asperger's Syndrome, The Asperger Personal Guide: Raising Self-Esteem and Making the Most of Yourself as a Adult with Asperger's Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome And Employment: Adults Speak Out About Asperger Syndrome and A Self-Determined Future with Asperger Syndrome.

Her work with the ASPECT group at Sheffield Hallam University resulted in numerous strides forward in autistic representation and a comprehensive study on the needs of adults with Asperger's Syndrome in the United Kingdom.

Genevieve will be remembered for her contributions to our community and commitment to improving the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum. Her death is a tragedy and we mourn the loss of one of our own. If she is going to opt out of living in her body, what hope do we other Adult Aspies have? I always thought I would go that way, and now I am more confident it will be my way out, too. Please remember I have no family and my cat will go back to the same shelter I got him from, so I am not inconveniencing anyone by my actions. At least I can be responsible.

I ordered one of her books after learning of her death and now that i'm reading it, it makes me sad to know she didn't find the happiness she was looking for. She was trying so hard, i mean, she wrote the book one year after being diagnosed so i imagine she was researching a lot. The book is full of advice on how to cope with asperger, while at the same time she said that she needed constant medication to cope with her depression and anxiety, that the life she dreamed for herself hasn't materialized. I hope a day comes when good things start happening to good people instead of the other way around. She was born exactly the same day as me, july 3rd 1981.

This article actually brought me some happiness as I hadn't heard of those books, and they sound very useful. But it made me very sad that I'd only heard about them after the author's death. It seems so unusual that someone who writes self-help books would commit suicide. I really regret only knowing of her now.

I suggest we all send our condolences. We might have not really known her or even heard of her but a death is a death none the less. When i look at the list of books she wrote, we should be grateful that she lived, even if only for what she's done for us.

She should have been an inspiration for other aspies instead of taking such step.
