Hello and welcome to episode five of Autism Talk TV. This time around, Alex Plank and Jack Robison talk with Geraldine Dawson, the chief science officer at Autism Speaks. Dawson, who's been involved in the autistic community for over 30 years, gives Autism Talk TV a sample of the research funded by Autism Speaks aimed at, not curing, but improving the lives of spectrumites.
We learn about some of the physical troubles autistic individuals sometimes face, such as sleep difficulties and GI problems, and how simply educating doctors could do a world of good.
We also hear about the unfair segregation of autistic children in school communities, and how special education for aspies and auties could be made obsolete by simply raising awareness and educating teachers and school officials.

If Autism Speaks ever starts practicing what Gerri Dawson is preaching in this 3 minute video, I will be very happy. Currently, they are still seeking a pre-natal test. Until they publicly state that they are giving up their old dream of a world without autism, I cannot trust them or their all-talk, no-substance garbage.

This is the second in a series of "autism speech" air time, that was not in interview format. The content was controled by as-speaks - which makes me believe it was the only way they would participate. None of the controversies that we aspergians would like to be addressed was brought up. this was a totally unauthentic waste of my time and free advertising for them. How stupid do they think we are?
There is not one single autistic on its board of directors, or otherwise represented within the ranks of the organization.
Autism Speaks wants very little to do with autistics who are fully able to advocate for themselves
Autism Speaks recently allied with “Cure Autism Now.”
Autism Speaks’ leadership simply don’t understand the point of view of autistics.
Alison Tepper Singer, the vice president of communications and awareness for Autism Speaks, who was also prominently featured in “Autism Every Day,” a fundraising film made by her organization. In one rather famous— and controversial— scene, Singer describes a moment in which she was so exasperated, she had seriously contemplated driving off a bridge with her autistic daughter.

The Science is finally beginning to catch up. Researchers at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, NV have recently found a correlation between a newly discovered retrovirus (2005) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There is speculation that it may be present in autism, as well, because of the many overlapping symptoms. There are known genetic differences and dietary intolerances. Some of the people I know with autism and aspergers (maybe including myself) make me think that in many ways, perhaps some of these individuals merely represent a forward step in evolution.... the rest just need to catch up! We must begin by understanding. With understanding comes appreciation. With appreciation comes enjoyment. I have never found an autistic or aspie whose presence I didn't enjoy. In the words of Temple Grandin, "Nature is cruel, we don't have to be." I am new to this site, and I love the name "Wrong Planet." I have always felt, for as long as I can remember, that I was on the wrong planet. For everyone who shares that sense, I can only imagine that it is for good reason - we are here to change it!

Autism Speaks is an abhorrent organization that perpetuates stereotypes and spreads fear. Sorry, but it is more than a little difficult for me to take seriously anything that comes from anyone involved with an organization that would release a video like I Am Autism. I refuse to do business with any company associated with Autism Speaks and I really don't care to hear a thing they have to say until they start practicing acceptance and stop promoting a prenatal test that will become the equivalent of a mass genocide of the autistic unborn.
