Sociopathy has been pretty well dropped as a valid diagnosis; but it describes me generally, and I do play a lot of videogames [I'm too lazy to kill real people, after all]. To a degree, the portrayal could be a matter of jealousy. I've had people tell me--apparently sincerely--that they wish they could remember numbers and dates and basic math the way I can. I've also had people mention various attributes, and denigrate the whole with 'Yeah; but you're a freak'. It seems to be human nature to encounter any anomaly, better or worse, and try to rationalise it into a disability, symptom, or illness. Or--and probably more likely--the average idiot has no idea what autism is and doesn't particularly want to find out; so it's become a simple, digestible plotdevice keeping people watching the flashing colours between adverts. Remind me: is it still cynicism if it's probably true? Curiously, the one chance I've seen for a television show to get it right was abandoned: an episode of HouseMD had an autistic kid with parasites, and the implication that House himself might have Asperger; in the end, Cuddy denied that he qualified, though I keep having people suspect that House is based on me, out in the world. So I'm really not sure why autists are necessarily morons, villains, or both on television; I can only assume that the demographic don't want to think that we could be clever, invisible, and potentially able to take over the world as some new order of intelligence, like robots and computers used to be.
We talked about this on another thread, and I'll repeat my concern here: The portrayal of the Jerry Espenson character on Boston Legal concerns me. I know that it's a TV show, and as a rule it has to be entertaining, still... I have Asperger's Syndrome, but I don't jump up and down like a bunny rabbit when excited or purr like a cat when I'm distressed. I have yet to meet another Aspie who does that.
This aspie does.

What do you guys think of Jerry Espenson from Boston Legal? I'm thrilled that they're portraying Asperger's at all. Sometimes I'm mad at Jerry, and sometimes I relate to him pretty well, but I was curious what you guys think.

What you ya'll think of Bones?
Generally, I like Bones. I really Identify with the title character, as her way of anylyzing society in order to understand it is what I do every day in order to function in society.
~~SPOILERS FOR SEASON FINALE~~
My spot of bulking is that they pushed Zach for an Aspie but pushed away from Bones being one, even though Bones is more accurate for AS and Zach? maybe, but I would add the additional diagnosis of Sociopath. Up until the season finale I thought It was FABULOUS, and then. . . Well. While they don't come out and call Zach an Aspie directly, a lot LOT of people take him for one. I just. Ugh.
I had a friend talk about how his Aspie-ness was the plot device used to idenify him as a villian, and I kinda flipped out on her about the HUGE differences here. And just. There's a big difference between creating a logic pattern to figure people out and not recognizing that people have feelings. I just. D:
~~END SPOILERS~~
But yeah. It's rather frustrating when people expect me to be good with numbers just because of this. For me, it's the exact opposite- I'm HORRIBLE with numbers, but give me patterns and I'm on a roll! just. They need better researchers for the writers of these shows and movies, seriously.

Post subject: Boston Legal
We talked about this on another thread, and I'll repeat my concern here: The portrayal of the Jerry Espenson character on Boston Legal concerns me. I know that it's a TV show, and as a rule it has to be entertaining, still... I have Asperger's Syndrome, but I don't jump up and down like a bunny rabbit when excited or purr like a cat when I'm distressed. I have yet to meet another Aspie who does that. But the Boston Legal writers have Jerry Espenson do that and more. Worse, he as an Aspie girlfriend (played by Mary Gross) who was sexually attracted to objects and threatened Jerry's law partner. The writers of Boston Legal often do a good thing by portraying Jerry's humanity, but lately they've been portraying us as a bunch of perverts and sociopaths. I'm thinking of writing to them and getting other member's of WP to do the same.

Well, I kind of am a kid with tons of services that is good at math with loaded parents, but I am not homeschooled. And many of the ways people with AS are portrayed in the media is pretty bad even if you don't look at anything to do with the first part of my post.

The media do not walk in our shoes, for if they did they would not do things like this.

I saw the whole "Make a film thing" and I realised "Smeg, too easy!!!!!!!!! I can do that!"
Basically, if everyone could film a small segment of themselves being themselves in everyday life, then I can edit it no sweat and make it all flow.
Sorry to sound like a computer-nerd, but I am one.
All the material will have to be in mpg format though.
Who likes that idea?

Post subject: Mozart and the Whale
What do you think of the portrayal of Aspies in the movie Mozart and the Whale? When I saw it, I wasn't convinced that Isabel was on the autistic spectrum. Any thoughts on this?

I have noticed that the best portrayals of autistic/aspie characters on TV are the ones who aren't diagnosed officially as part of their story line. Monk is a good example, he is so like me! I am also fed up that all the documentaries focus on autistic savants. Oh how great it would be if we were all like that!
I am average and I hate getting that rubbed in my face...
Another one I really like is Gil Grissom on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
yh grissom is ace and good catch with him being aspie i never got that till you mentioned it good spot

I hate it how kids how kids with aspergers are represented on TV that were all good at math and are homeschooled and have excellent services and their parents are rich. Well thats not the case services cost 800-to more than 1000 dollars and you cant get any if your not rich. That and rhode island has not curriculum for home schooling why dont they document our suffering instead of making us looking like a bunch super smart kids with social problems with loaded parents thats not often the case. Its either that or were made out to be murderous psychopaths that play lots of videogames. But there's one problem video games dont cause violent behavior and if it does for some of these psycho well their out of touch with reality.
Here's what I have to say about your topic:
1. I'm one of those who are good at math but, I'm still poor.
2. I got free Home Schooling at the Warwick Public Library from my IEP. (because I was Disrupting the class every time the kids wouldn't stop bothering me)
3.Violent Media doesn't make people violent and I know of a Book with more violence than any "Grand Theft Auto" Game..... I believe it was called "The Holy Bible".

The thing about the aspie character in The Big Bang Theory - Sheldon - is that of course his aspie characteristics are exaggerated, because the personality traits of all the characters are exaggerated. It's not a show about laughing at the aspie freak. The characters are archetypes and constantly misunderstand each other, which is where the comedy comes from. You've also got a dumb blonde character, a Christian fundamentalist character, a guy with a pathological inability to talk to women, a guy who inaccurately believes that women adore him, and so on. It's not saying that all aspies are going to be like Sheldon, any more than it's suggesting that all Christians are like Sheldon's mother, or that all Indian men are unable to speak to women.
The only thing that does bother me a little is that it exacerbates the stereotype that all aspies are brilliant at maths/physics. But then, it's a show about a bunch of physicists. I couldn't really expect him to be hopeless at it.
