Inventor - brilliant post! So good to see someone pointing these things out, I feel I'm banging my head against a brick wall half my life trying to explain these things. Sigh. And Zendell, equally good point. A dentist friend's daughter suffers the effects of mercury poisoning, due to prolonged exposure while her mother was pregnant, and in the first two years of her life, thanks to the mercury amalgams her mother used so often every day. The first list sums up her condition brilliantly: neurological problems developmental delay speech delay language problems short-term memory problems concentration problems And she also suffers coordination problems, chemical sensitivities, mild seizures, and various allergies alongside. She's 23 years old and won't ever be able to live independently.
The same can be said for pro-vaccine Big Pharma-sponsored organisations, and the majority of mainstream media.
Just a point.
No mention was made of that when it comes to medical journals. Medical journals are peer reviewed internationally - meaning that they are not enclosed or protected from opinions outside of places where "Big Pharma" do not have a foothold.

Ok, if that's true then that's a good start, but regardless of that there are still others that are manufactured with thimerosal and contain thimerosal, and thus mercury too.
It couldn't be more obvious that you're just clutching at straws. That the removal of thimerosal from mandatory childhood vaccines hasn't stopped the 'autism epidemic' is the most obvious proof that thimerosal does not cause autism.
To state the obvious, amalgam is chemically different from thimerosal, and hence will have different toxicities, etc. (Just as hydrofluoric acid, probably the most dangerous acid around, is rather different from teflon, the thing on frying pans, even though both are fluorine-rich - and hydrogen-rich for that matter; for an even more dramatic example, graphite and diamonds are rather different, even though they're both made from carbon)
As baseballfan says, real scientific papers are peer-reviewed and published in specialist journals or conferences. I would trust something from an anti-vaccine website as much as I'd trust the tobacco industry on the dangers of smoking.

yes - but independent studies have been done that show no correlation between thimerosal and autism. There have also being systematic reviews of research studies carried out to test robustness of these research studies .... by the Cochrane database. These reviews support the evidence disproving the link between autism and vaccines.
The dose of mercury in thimerosal is minimal, and is excreted from the body within 30 days.
Evidently (from what I read) thimerosal is no longer used in childhood vaccines in the states.

That paper isn't a scientific paper though. Scientific papers are peer-reviewed by the scientific community and published in referred journals and conferences.
The article cited is a newsletter article from an anti-vaccine nonprofit organization's newsletter that was written by a chemical engineer. The article references an array of papers some of which are peer-reviewed (and most of which are not). The sources do not reflect current understanding (all references are older than 2000), and the article seems to do most of its "analysis" by cherrypicking from other articles. Anti-vaccine websites and newsletters are not generally considered trustworthy and credible sources since they have a specific agenda of showing that vaccines are harmful.
Additionally, there is a long distance between a hypothesized link or association (anyone can hypothesize an association about anything) and true meaningful correlation and causation. Since the 1800s, the number of pirates on the open seas has sharply decreased at the same time that the average temperature worldwide has increased. It would silly to purport that the decrease in the number of pirates is responsible for the temperature increase, yet that is exactly what vaccine causation believers do when they suggest that vaccines are responsible for a host of problems without backing their assertion up with credible evidence to support direct causation.
It seems that lay hypotheses has become almost a niche industry. There is a journal called Medical Hypotheses that is wholly dedicated to hypotheses about medicine-related phenomenon. Rarely do the hypotheses described in that journal have any meaningful evidence backing them.

Also, on the UK vaccines thing, the flu vaccine still has mercury, as does the DTaP one as far as I know, and a few others. Plus they only had to phase it out from then, so there is a chance remaining stocks still contain thimerosal.
The stocks from then expired in 2003.

Chronic low level exposure? Ever heard the expression "Autistic As a Hatter"? or "Mad As a Dentist"? There has been no mercury in UK child vaccines since 2004. Neither is there lead in Petrol [Gasoline]. Neither is there widespread environmental mercury pollution. In the UK, you can't even buy a mercury thermometer these days. Still same amount of autism around. 'Nuff Said. Refs: DoH, Lancet and cam.ac.uk

1.6 How can mercury affect children?...
What you posted is nothing but the acute effects of severe mercury poisoning. Such posts are unwelcome, confuse the issue, and do nothing to rule out mercury as a factor in chronic conditions such as autism.
Research has only recently begun into the effects of chronic exposure to low levels of mercury. Emerging evidence suggest mercury (primarily from dental amalgam fillings) may play a role in Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and unexplained neurological symptoms.
From what I've read, this type of mercury exposure is associated with:
neurological problems
developmental delay
speech delay
language problems
short-term memory problems
concentration problems
Many of the above symptoms are known and were reported to the FDA as symptoms of dental amalgam (mercury) exposure. See for yourself at
http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/06/slides/2006-4218s2-04.pdf
If you research Pink Disease, caused by mercury poisoning, you will find more symptoms associated with mercury exposure. Some symptoms from
http://www.pinkdisease.org/
skin rashes
lethargy
sensitivity to light
autoimmune disorders
chemical sensitivities
allergies
coordination difficulties
depression

I'm afraid that rant is just a roundabout way of calling anyone who disagrees with you stupid.
MissPickWickian's post is appreciated, though.

The main evidence I have seen put forth is a link between childhood vaccination and the onset of Autism. If it was two years later preschool/Kindergarten would be claimed as the cause.
I have also heard that the whole link was from lawyers who wanted to be paid to shut up.
Exposure is not the problem with mercury, that takes a lot, and usually over a long time. Most things can live with it, but it accumlates up the life chain. such as in fish, huge amounts of mercury were released by paper companies, and fish that eat fish, birds that eat fish, and people who eat fish do get a toxic dose.
A second opinion is paper company lawyers explaining it away as as being so safe and natural it is even used in childhood vaccines. Humans are dumb, and sit on juries.
There is a swamp on the Louisiana Texas border where it is not safe to eat anything, as unlike other places that dumped in rivers, they dumped in a contained swamp, and it will be there forever.
When children were found to have very high levels of lead, lawyers accused them of eating paint chips.
It had nothing to do with emissions from local industry.
In a very uncharistic action, they did something, the EPA was formed, 1972, and all lead was tken from gas, paint, and no mention was made of why. Some millions of tons of Tetra Ethel Lead was used in anti knock compounds and came out the exhaust. Children born from 1955 to 1975 in dense settlement, cities, suburbs, had mental retardation, IQ's 10 to 20% lower than predicted by their parents IQ.
The only treatment was dumbing down the schools. Those people are now 30 to 50, and have elected Bush twice. They also were the most religious group ever in America, forming the Christian Right.
They are the pawns of the same oil companies that poisoned them.
Autism is a developmental delay, we do get there, and often farther. Lead caused mental retardation does not improve with age, the ability to think does not improve, but the choices become more important.
All of the things that define human culture, Art, History, Wisdom, are lacking in this generation that follows TV preachers, joins mega churches, water slides for Jesus, and voted for the guy who has said God more than all other Presidents combined.
Only the oil companies understand them, bought Bush, lead the fight to smite Babylon, tore up The Constitution, replaced it with a Faith Based Homeland Security, and are moving for a Theocracy, because minority White Christians should rule for God, for only they and the oil companies know God's Plan.
We do have heavy metal problems, but they are not from mercury in vaccines.

Excellent post MissPickwickian, the information about the Minimata disaster is too well documented for me to ignore. Mercury is a teratogen and a poison, but everything I have seen about it does not seem consistent with all the thimersol hype.
