I think maybe the false pity is the worst part. When someone noticed something different about me and I had to explain Aspergers before; that was bearable if uncomfortable. Now, though, if I tell someone, I also have to try and convince them that what they think they already know is wrong. FOr the last time, Aspergers is not a "social disease"! Poverty is a social disease; where do people get off labelling Aspergers as such? Or as a disease of any form? It's not as if it could be cured - at least, not without essentially destroying us.
peoples ignorance will only be dissapated when we get out there and speak for ourselves
show them our side of things and not let just autism speaks(or others like them) say they know about autism.
In other words...never.

There is so much misinformation on the Internet about AS. A lot of those sites are very depressing.
I haven't seen any of those sites. Can you post some links?

To be fair, there are myths and untruths about everything in the world. There are a majority of ppl who believe the moon landing was a hoax, for example.
Shouldn't let it get you down that NT's don't understand us. We, after all, do not understand them. A hell of a lot of ppl on this forum believe that all NT's are evil bullies who are stupid and brutish. How do you think an NT mother of an autistic child on this forum, say, saw that? Or an NT husband/wife of an Aspie?
What I'm saying is, don't take it so seriously. And if you can't take it, don't give it.

LOL - currently the mattress is on the floor ... don't have the spare cash to replace it yet.
Will probably by a Divan - they don't break as easily ... hopefully the Trampoline I bought her will distract her in good weather

Myths exist but some things are so true. Reading these comments takes me back to my childhood. It's true. I was a "spinner" but I thought it was so normal! I thought all the kids spun. I had no idea it was a symptom. Another thing I did was rock back and forth on the couch at the baby sitter's before school. I can remember hitting my back on the couch while watching cartoons. I even got the babysitter's daughter to imitate what I was doing. I also rocked back and forth in bed. Again, I thought this was a normal part of childhood.
Another thing I did; jumped on the bed until I broke it or my mom yelled at me to stop.
That was a happy time.
Ah, spinning. That was fun.
Apparently I'm still a rocker though.......
My daughter only lives with me at the weekends ... since January, she has smashed 3 beds by jumping on them <grrr> I guess she inherited more from me than just my good looks
take the beds off the stands. Put the box springs on the rug/floor and the matress on that. (unless you have bugs or critters that you need to suspend the bed off the floor) This way when she bounces at least the bed stays stable. my parents got so <grrrrr> they just harnessed me on a short leash to the door knob, and I
don't
suggest that!

However, I have had episodes where I refused or could not communicate, rocked back and forth, and screamed when someone would try to touch me...

What gets me is the "well, I once met/knew/heard of/read about a person with AS and you're not like him/her."
[String of expletives not appropriate for this forum]
I HATE when people say that. Oh right, you met ONE autistic person, and so the estimated 40 million (1 in 150) of us worldwide must all be exactly the same as that specific individual?!!
Amen to that!!! So many people have this idea in their head that people w/ AS are incapable of communicating, continuously rock back and forth, and scream when they are touched! Such people think that if we don't act like 'Rain Man' then we don't suffer from AS!
