It's interesting... I eat a fairly similar diet to the paleolithic one, though with some exceptions: I live on vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts and seeds. Although I tend to avoid them, I do eat grains (wheat or rye, primarily) a few times a week, and potatoes fairly frequently (a few times a week but more than the grains, which I instinctively avoid but can't avoid in certain foods) and I will eat lentils occasionally, but that's really it. I don't eat much red meat, unless I feel the urge to eat it sometimes and will do - I listen to my body and tend to give it what it's asking for! - but then it's organic etc. Not much dairy - only greek yoghurt and blue cheeses - and no eggs, due to allergy. I just avoid anything processed, anything packaged, anything nasty. Natural foods full of energy are the way to go. I eat anything with processed sugar and refined flour and I just don't feel right - my head goes a bit muddled and I feel quite off! Give me my fruits and veges any day. :)
Roast shin of beef with roast carrots and a few roast potatoes, ( been eating a wee bit of potato again) with coco/flat green beans.
mmmmmmmmmmm
And chestnut puree with almond flakes and a few banana slices.
Yesterday was tinned tuna and sardine salad, made with mayo, cucumber, garlic, chopped carrot, flageolet beans, on chicory, with slivers of dry smoked ham!
Ate cheese a few times this last week, and it's definitely "No". Can't tolerate it. The reasons why I stopped for 6 months are evident!
( gut inflamation and skin irritation)
Dislike how it makes me feel out of my body, floaty, spacey. I used to like that. I don't anymore. It makes me feel less grounded; not as fun as I remembered!

Yes, essentially it is a low/no starchy carbohydrate diet. Which helps me massively with cravings.
And if I give into the cravings, lastcrazyhorn,

very soon I don't want to eat anything
but
wheat and dairy and sugar and bacon and chicken!

Cost wise, is this diet more expensive, per week, than what it normally costs on a regular north american diet?
Coming from a mainly vegetarian diet, with lots of rice, beans, lentils, and potatoes with veg, this could well seem/be more expensive. If we hadn't also been buying a fair amount of nuts, seeds, avocadoes, corn chips, and various other slightly expensive things, and if we weren't eating less of expensive nibbly/snacky food ( crisps, chocolate etc) as a result, I guess it could seem pretty bad.
But compared to an average diet, which usually includes a fair amount of packet cereals, tinned and processed stuff, packets of biscuits, pizzas, and other over priced pre-packaged stuff, I don't think it does end up more expensive, especially if you almost completely cut out dairy ( esp. icecream and yoghurts ) as you're supposed to aswell.
Have decided not to eat pork though, however tempting it is price-wise, because it just doesn't feel so good.
Whereas beef, and lamb, and eggs and a very occasional piece of cheese feel/taste healthy, pork feels "fake"/artificial, which maybe isn't surprising seeing how pigs in intensive industrial-agriculture are no more than flesh-growing machines, which is very far from their natural state as wild and even alarming wild animals in a way cows/bovines and sheep etc never were.
I'm a bit unsure about chicken, even the free-range kind, because it doesn't "feel" as "useful"/satisfying or something. Ostrich though!

Boosts energy, removes food cravings, may help to reduce/eliminate auto-immune problems, involves less packaged/packet/processed food, consuming less sugar and low/no refined/starchy carbs is good for sleep, against depression, and to lose weight. Shouldn't be more expensive because no-carbs will mean fewer cravings for lots of expensive ( per weight) packet filler-foods.

Cost wise is this diet more expensive, per week then what it normally cost on a regular north american diet?

I'm allergic to shellfish (my body tries to expel it from my system as fast as possible and by any means possible), nuts and seeds often make me sick if I eat much of them (minus the random peanut butter sandwich), I'm not supposed to eat salad (also makes me sick) . . . um, should I go on?
Different diets seem to work for different people. Each can experiment to figure out what works best.
Paleo works so great for me I'd never go back.
A sort of offshoot of paleo is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which I went on first and which got me into paleo. It's reputed to be good for autists, actually.

I only eat chicken and turkey now, and occasionally ham. If you google paleolithic or neanderthal diet, you'll find lots.
It's pretty simple, though. Could a caveman have had access to the food you're about to eat? If not, don't eat it.

I have AS and it sounds like an interesting diet. How would I go about talking to my parents about it? Also, do you have links on it?

at the moment i eat a lot of fruit, some meat, and some whole wheat bread simply because it's easy. when i'm involved with rowing for over 4hrs a day and working for 7-8hrs per day i don't have much time to prepare a lot of food. it's much easier to pack 3 or 4 fruits, throw together a simple sandwich, and go.
sounds like a pretty decent diet if it's providing you with enough nutrients.

...paleo... I like it.
Me too.
I am amazed to discover how much I like eating meat now that I no longer think of it as something "bad"/dubious/practically poisonous/unclean .
Today ate totally scrumptious hot-pot I cooked, with a big round thick piece of beef on a hollow bone with marrow, ( between 3 of us) that wasn't expensive, with carrots, flat/coco green beans, ( added at last moment so still sweet, almost crunchy and juicy), half a bottle of red wine, some tomatoes, and garlic, and chopped celery, and lots of parsley. Which was mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Followed later by half of a packet of roquefort, blue goat's cheese, and see if can tolerate it, a dose of calcium-rich dairy once a week.

I've eaten pretty paleo for a few years now (except with booze).
Seems to keep me pretty slim & healthy, plus I like it.

Got back on track yesterday/the day after: black sausage with scrambled egg and lots of fresh parsley.
Avocado mush with carrot and cucumber sticks, followed by almond flakes and apple puree.

Was doing so well, and feeling increasingly capable of action, ... and then today had visitors and I couldn't quite get my head round serving an entirely protein and no-carbohydrate meal, ( I still feel embarrassed about animal protein, in the world of sound eco 'ish alt/fringe people who eat veggies and rice a lot), so I made spicy chickpea, carrot, and tomato hot-pot, with a few pieces of beef, with green beans and rice.
And ate some.
Then I ate a small piece of macaroon, ( sugar) and went on to eat a second, bigger plateful of lunch warmed up for my supper, followed by three rice cakes with marmelade.
Now feeling completely stoned/spacey. And totally disconnnected from reality, which I do not need as tomorrow I must have my head clear to deal with an important phone call; negotiating, explaining, stating, declaring, and asking a series of things about the academic inspection/control that my son is summoned to attend in 10 days time.
And I do
not
need to feel paranoid, or panicky or the other things that I usually feel after sugar consumption particularly. It's amazing how instantly the starchy carbos had me craving sugar again.
Bum.
PS: It was a lovely visit though. The other, english speaking, homeschooling mother and I talked non-stop apart for moments here and there when I zoned/flaked out rather, and her son and mine played non-stop and didn't want to stop when it came time to leave 5 hours later!

Today I ate beef steak ( the thin kind of cut) with fried free-range organic egg fried in goose fat, served with green beans, a few cherry tomatoes, and seasalt.
Unsugared apple and plum puree with almond flakes and a few raisins.

Yeah, I do eat fish... yum yum! I try not to too often though, say once a week or so, because of the mercury content these days (thank you, pollution!). But I do love my fish.

I don't eat meat because I don't like the taste and I don't like how I feel when I've eaten it... kinda heavy and sluggish and lethargic, and I can't think clearly.
I'm getting the big sleepy feeling, as if my body is suddenly relaxing after a big strain. Is that what you mean? it is completely weird, like I said in my post on page 1, because I have most of my adult life taken it for granted that I can stay awake as long as I like, never fall asleep involuntarily, etc, and suddenly with meat I am feeling like my body is taking over for a change, and demanding rest.
For protein you can still eat fish though, right? I don't eat eggs much; I only half like them, ( the yolk) , but I can see that it is annoying as an almost-veggie not to be able to use them.
