HB 1150 was written and passed the House, to guarantee that insurance providers would cover autism related services, up to $36,000/year for up to five (or seven? - I forget) years. At this point, insurance companies can totally refuse to cover any autism-related services (speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.). The bill was stuck in committee in the Senate. It was finally voted out of committee, with substantial, BAD changes. Many organizations have been working very hard on this legislation and this last move, orchestrated by Senator Don White, was very upsetting. Autism Speaks is encouraging everyone to THANK Don White for moving the bill out of committee (he's the one who was keeping it in committee and refusing phone calls from any but his own constituents) and to support the gutted bill! All the other people who have worked so hard on this legislation are trying to get the bill changed back, or voted down. The bill, as changed, will hurt kids and families in Pennsylvania. The changes were those that were demanded by the insurance lobbies. Autism Speaks doesn't care about what the bill looks like, or what it does to Pennsylvanians - they just want to check off another "win" in their score sheet for their PR about national statistics on what "they" have accomplished. The same thing happened with Down's Syndrome: they found a genetic marker, and subsequently initiated genocide ops against Down's. Autism Speaks seeks to do the same with autism. <br /> <br />You could point out that they don't spend any money on support or actually helping autistics (someone recently posted government accounting of their budget for the past couple years).
