There are three main body types definitions used in sport: The ecto- meso- and endomorphic body type. Of course, most people are between two categories; very few people are either 100% ectomorph or 100% endomorph. Regardless of body definition, most people can become athletic. Keep in mind that many of the people on theese pictures have admitted to steroid usage. Ectomorph The most characteristic of an ectomorph is the light frame and the low bodyfat. Ectomorphs have an excellent metabolism, and many ectomorphs can eat (almost) whatever they want without gaining fat. However, ectomorphs are slow gainers when it comes to muscles, but that doesn't mean that they can't become very muscular. Some ectomorphic bodybuilders (such as Frank Zane) are well known for their aesthetic physics. Many long distance runners are ectomorphs, since the main strength of the ectomorph is the endurance. Some examples of ectomorphs: Brad Pitt, Paris Hilton, Frank Zane. Ecto-mesomorph (most ectomorphic traits, but some mesomorphic) Ecto-mesomorphs usually have a slightly heavier frame than ectomorphs, as well as a higher amount of muscle mass, and slightly more explosive muscles. Many swimmers and basketball players are ecto-mesomorphs. Long limbs, good endurance and a little better muscle building abilities than true ectomorphs, can make them excellent fitness competitors. Some examples: Arnold Schwarzenegger (according to himself), Larry Scott, Jessica Alba Meso-ectomorph (most mesomorphic, but some ectomorphic traits) Meso-ectomorphs have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, provided that the right training is there. Meso-endomorphs typically has a heavier frame than ecto-mesomorphs and better abilities to gain muscle mass. They usually have more explosive strength than endurance. This bodytipe is common amoung short distance sprinters. Some examples: Michael Johnson, Angelina Jolie Mesomorph Mesomorphs have medium to heavy frames, and have a v-shaped body. Their most characteristic feature is the ability to gain muscle mass and at the same time have a fast metabolism. Note that the right training must be there, and that mesomorphs who spends most of their time eating will get fat. Mesomorphs usually have an outstanding explosive strength, while not beeing particularly good at endurance. Many bodybuilders and strongmen are mesomorphs. Some examples: Scott Mendelson, Ronnie Coleman, Mariusz Pudzianowski Meso-endomorph This is a far more common body type than true mesomorph. Meso-endomorphs have excellent muscle building genetics, as well as a medium to heavy frame. But unlike the mesomorphs, their metabolism is somewhat slower. Cardio workouts should be a part of their schedule, even when bulking. A meso-endomorphs metabolism will slow down after a while if he/she lowers their food intake. A meso-endomorph who is ripped of fat will look like a mesomorph. Many strongmen and olympic lifters are meso-endomorphs. A good example of a meso-endomorph is Lee Priest (the guy is somewhat obese of season) Endo-mesomorph The endo-mesomorph will gain fat easier than the meso-endomorphs. Their frame is usually heavy, their hips are wider and their faces are rounder than that of a meso-endomorph. Like the mesomorph, the endo-mesomorph are usually powerfull, and their short limbs will give them an advantage in some lifts (such as benchpress or deadlift). Some olympic weightlifters are endo-mesomorphs. Endomorph Endomorphs typically have round bodys and gain fat easily. They usually don't have much muscles to begin with, but can gain muscle mass pretty quick. They also store more water than the other body types. This is not the best body type for athletes, but some power lifters are endomorphs.
I'm an endo-mesomorph. I have both muscle and flab, and I have that round, angelic face. It makes me wonder how much of my weight is muscle and how much of it is flab. I have a very unusual body type for a woman, but I think it's quite cool, as well.

Ectomorph. I can eat whatever I like without weight gain and am extremely thin.
I was surprised that so many of us are extomorph, what with the 50-60% overweight or obese percentage.

Meso-ectomorph. I do ten reps with a barbell and BAM I got some muscle.
I also can't run for beans...

Meso-ectomorph. Long spine, shortish legs, quite powerful for my size but almost no endurance.

Guess I'm the first one to own up to being an Endomorph (the kind of guy who gains 5 pounds looking at a doughnut)

Despite the fact that I have gained weight recently (I'm not fat by any means, but I look relatively normal as opposed to scrawny), it's taken me a long time to gain it. I have a slight, light frame and do not gain weight easily and can eat what I like, so that makes me ectomorph.

I'm definately an ectomorph.
I'm 5'8" tall but only weigh 120lbs. I eat a lot, but never seem to gain any extra weight.

i learned about ecto-meso-endo- morphs when i was a child at a psychiatric school. i found a book in my doctors library that i took to read.
it said that there was a scale of 1-7 for each of the somatotypes.
it said that every person contains all 3 somatotypes, and each somatotype is given a value from 1 to 7 as ascribed to an individual.
the score was rated as ectomorphy(1-7) then mesomorphy (1-7) and then endomorphy (1-7)
so an inherently skinny person with no muscle or fat would be a 7,1,1. (7 ecto, 1 meso, 1 endo)
a huge muscle man with not an ounce of fat on him and with big fat bones would be a 1,7,1. (1 ecto, 7 meso, 1 endo)
a person who is obese and is all flab, but has thin bones and no muscle mass maybe a 1,1,7.
there was a psychological attribute ascribed to each of the 3 somatotypes in the book.
apparently....
ectomorphs: are nervous and edgy. they panic easily and they are prone to paranoia and suspicion. they are usually very guarded.
mesomorphs: are impulsive and rash. they are passionate and lose their tempers easily. they attempt to dominate and strive to control. they think about sex often.
endomorphs: are happy and jocular people. they are content with indulgence. they are the most humerous and relaxed of all the body types.
that is what the book said (over many pages) in a very condensed way.
my body type is about a 3-3-3 given that basis for my understanding which is almost certainly outdated.

I think I'm an ecto-mesomorph or an ectomorph. My hips look wider, but they're normal, they only appear this way because my shoulders are so so so narrow.
When I gain weight, it's very evenly all over my body, so I never notice it. :p When I lose it, I get very skinny very fast. Putting on muscle is hard for me; even though I'm very thin, I'm "soft."

im guessing i would be Meso-endomorph its hard to tell tho because i have a big bone structure , big hips and during winter i gain a few pounds due to doing absolutely no cardio and going less to the gym (i eat all day , all year arround) but never get too fat (always 165-175 pounds 5'11)

Mesomorph. I'm short-ish and have a slightly larger than average frame (I'm 5'8", and my natural weight is about 150 pounds.) Although right now I'm about 160, as I'm a little out of shape. I can both gain and lose weight very easily, and build muscle fairly quickly. My endurance is probably average or slightly below.

Mesomorph or Meso-ectomorph. I am just under 5'0" (151cm), and I weigh 110lbs (50kg). Right now I am about 18% body fat. I am petite, but I don't have a very tiny build. I wouldn't consider myself small boned, but rather medium boned, and just short. I do have a small waist and ribcage, and I have an hourglass figure (35"-23"-34"). My thighs and upper arms are muscular, even when I'm not working out, and my shoulders aren't very narrow, but they aren't broad either....Although I am petite I don't wear petite sizes in clothes because my legs and arms are pretty long.
I have a six pack that is visible except for the area just under my belly button where I have a little bit more fat. I build muscle pretty quickly and I have a lot of muscle strength for a petite woman. I also have pretty decent endurance. I can run 10K (6.2 miles) in about 50 minutes (avg. 8 min/mile).
If I do not exercise and I don't pay attention to what I eat I can easily gain weight. I don't have the fastest metabolism.

I don't know, I'm 5"7' and I weigh around 135-140lbs, I have little body fat, and I have pretty good strength. I have veiny forearms, upper arms, have veins in my shoulders bulging out when I'm working out and veiny calf muscles, I have an eight pack which still is visible even under the very small layer of belly fat. I put on muscle and strength quickly. Maybe Meso-Ectomorph or Ecto-Mesomorph?

Its hard to say, due to your position. Im guessing mainly ectomorph, but again, its really hard to see.
I agree about the body builder thing. They train just to look huge and ripped. Having good aerobic ability has a lot to do with fitness, and most body builders dont have much. I doubt they could even run or punch fast with all that bulk. And they defenatly arent the healthiest people. Too much protein can have a negative effect on you, and excessive meat can damage your immune system and increase aging (although I do realize there are vegetarian/vegan body builders). Plus, they starve and dehydrate themselves before a competition to make their muscles more defined. Im not bashing though, just stating observations.
Also, trying to define the somatype of a body builder is very hard to do with the way their muscles are. Many people who are misinformed about somatypes think that all fat people are endomorph, all muscular people are mesomorphs, and all skinny people are ectomorphs. Not true at all and it annoys me when people say that. To find out the somatype of someone as accurately as possible, they should have minimal body fat and not have body builder sized muscles. That way its a good neutral/medium. Any somatype can be fat or muscular and the closer a person is to either of those two extremes the harder it is to determine their exact somatype.
