Attwood has made a firm public statement that Aspies do NOT make bad partners and parents, nor are they any more prone to be violent. This came in response to a recent petition objecting to Attwood's involvement with two NT/AS relationship support groups, FAAAS and ASPIA. (Well, technically it came right after the petition, anyway. Tony doesn't mention it.) These groups had both published material which claimed that Aspies are prone to be abusive and damaging to the NT's close to them. Attwood frequently collaborated with these groups. The Aspie community was objecting to Attwood lending his credibility toward what was perceived as hate speech. from http://www.faaas.org/doc.php?29,358 :
Tony Attwood, Ph.D. A Word from Tony Attwood "I would like to state quite clearly that having a diagnosis of autism or Asperger's syndrome does not render a person automatically incapable of being a good partner and parent. Indeed, many of the people I know with autism and Asperger's syndrome as clients and friends are exceptionally good parents and partners. Should a separation occur between partners and a Court examine the issue of custody of children and access then in my opinion, any decisions should be made on the basis of the abilities of each parent and not simply assume that a parent with autism or Asperger's syndrome is incapable of being a good parent. The term "Cassandra Affective Deprivation Disorder" has been coined by Maxine Aston. It is not an official diagnostic category. I do know that stress within a relationship between an adult with Asperger's syndrome and their partner can lead to the neurotypical partner having signs of a clinical depression. Effective relationship counselling by a counsellor knowledgeable in the area of autism and Asperger's syndrome can significantly improve the relationship and help alleviate the signs of depression. According to my knowledge, there is no research to suggest that people with autism and Asperger's syndrome are likely to be violent in a relationship to any greater degree than a typical person in the general population. I do know that a significant proportion of the clients that I see in my clinical practice express to me their concern in their ability to manage their temper but we now have programs such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to help those with autism and Asperger's syndrome manage feelings such as anger. Problems with anger management also occur in the ordinary population but the nature of the treatment of difficulties with anger management must include an appreciation of the different experiences and cognitive profile of someone with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have presented workshops for FAAAS for couples where one of the partners has a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome and in all my presentations, I have approached the issues in a very positive way examining strategies to make a successful relationship." by Tony Attwood via email, May 8, 2009

I'm glad he issued a statement and I believe what he's saying about trying to educate FAAS people.
I signed the petition and I feel relieved by his response.

Will do! May have some news regarding ASPIA soon...

There's a woman on YouTube who goes on about this "Cassandra disorder" or whatever it is, and it seems rather hokey. There's a growing amount of divorcee NT women who seem to have a huge grudge against their AS husbands. Though their grudges may be warranted, it seems that there bad experiences have painted a particular brush over everyone with AS for them; and they seem to be on a crusade to warn other women of the "dangers" of getting involved with an Aspie. Just check out YouTube or blogs and such where these women voice their opinions.
I've read through some of the threads in the Delphi forum called ASpartners last night. I'm still reeling. For a group of people who claim aspies have no empathy, they certainly have little to zilch empathy themselves. Why the hell can't these women even give a little understanding and support to the AS partners/spouses? I was actually thinking about going on dating sites myself recently but I don't know how well things will go in the long run if they google Asperger's find some of the crap they talk about there.
Before we get off the topic though, EvilZak can you please continue posting here if there are any updates on the campaign. I would like to know how it goes.

Thanks EvilZak. I'm not a member of your website and I found that I can't read the topic where the petition is spoken about.
That would be right - when we're organizing campaigns, we tend to do it in the members-only "Campaigns and Initiatives" section so we can't be pre-empted by people stumbling across the details in Google.
For those who are members, or are interested in joining, this is the thread we're talking about:

Signed. I have one more question. Will I get a reply back as to how it goes?
Probably not from the petition, but I'll be keeping everyone updated on what's happening from my site (
http://www.spectrumites.com/
), and I can keep posting here whenever anything happens, too...

Yay! *grins*
I just passed on ASAN's contact details to you via PM - they're the best people to ask what's happening, especially in the US.

Westernwild, I think you've gotten so uptight about that statement from FAAAS that I posted a link to, that you completely missed the question I asked in my post. What is the current status of the petition?
Still ongoing. Tony Attwood's currently on a speaking tour of The UK & US, which makes it a bit tricky to negotiate - hopefully when he returns things will move forward a bit quicker.
I'm hoping to have organised a bit more on-the-ground support for the campaign in Brisbane by that time, as I think it's very easy to ignore people signing petitions & sending emails, but not so easy to ignore a group of people collecting signatures at a conference.
To put it another way, the campaign will be ongoing until Tony removes his name from FAAAS's Professional Advisory Board, or at least until he gets some serious bad press from not doing so.
(To clarify, I'm not actually running the campaign - I'm just someone in contact with Ari who happens to live in Brisbane).

I'm sorry, Jono, but I don't know what the current status of the petition is since I'm not in charge of it and didn't post it. I'd be curious to know that myself. Anyone know?
