Sorry, I didn't make my response clear, I wasn't sure if you saw the link to vote, where the thread was brought back to life, so I repeated it in my response. It's definitely worthwhile to vote. |

| Voted for the ASAN. The less money going to Autism Speaks the better. |

This year CafePress is inviting voting. And the top two vote getters out of the seven listed split 10% of retail proceeds for April 2012.
Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is listed, Autism Speaks is listed, and five other choices, plus space for a write-in.

Each person can vote once. |

Sounds like Cafe Press is listening to their customers. Their compromise in allowing customers to provide input on another organization to share one-half of the proceeds collected sounds fair.
Does anyone have a list of organizations that provide support for Autism, to chose from?
I didn't realize they had been had been donating a portion of their profit for the last two years, I'm guessing in April for Autism Awareness month, per content from the article.
Edit: I saw the list of their suggested alternate organizations on their website. I looked them up on the internet and they seem pretty consistent in their missions.
Are there any known problems with any of these that are listed on their survey?:
Autism Society of America
US Autism and Aspergers Association
The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation
Autism NOW
ACT Today |

|
I prefer sending the following version:
Subject: Autism Speaks hurts autistics
Dear Cafe Press,
I'm writing as an autistic customer to express my disappointment with your decision to donate 10% of all sales of autism-related products to Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is not a neutral or non-controversial charity. Many autistic adults, all over the world, have grave concerns about Autism Speaks' operating practices and fundraising tactics. Autism Speaks fails to include any autistic adults on their board of directors or in executive positions. Furthermore, only 4% of the funds donated to Autism Speaks go to services for autistics. Many autistics find Autism Speaks' advertising and fundraising strategies - which rely on fear, pity and spreading stereotypes about autistics - deeply unethical. By forcing your autistic vendors and autistic customers who sell and buy autism-related products to donate money to an organization they are morally opposed to, you break the bonds of trust that connect you with your autistic customer and autistic vendor base. I urge you to reconsider your donation to Autism Speaks - and I will be withholding my business from Cafe Press until you do.
Sincerely,
[name here] |
