As opposed to your ear lobe, your cartilage doesn't have good blood flow and circulation. So, when your ear lobe gets infected your white blood cells can fix it a lot more easily. With cartilage, it is a lot harder for your ears to fight off the infection. Not to mention that (depending on your hair) it can easily get bacteria and oil from your hair on it. Have you had any type of cartilage piercing before? Pain and healing from cartilage piercings are different than ear lobe piercings. I have had 3 ear cartilage piercings and my nose pierced and it is not the same as the five ear lobe piercings. Like what werewolf said, it is really hard to sleep on that side after you get it pierced. I had trouble sleeping after some of my piercings because I couldn't get comfortable without bumping into my piercings. Also, do you have AS pain hypo/hypersensitivities?? If you are hyposensitive and don't feel pain easily then it is less of an issue. If you are hypersensitive then you might want to consider putting it off (is it really such a big deal to wait a few months?). I used to reward myself at the end of final exams with a piercing. For scaffold, another important thing to keep in mind. Are your ears thick or thin? I went with a friend of mine and we were both going to get it done. Her ears were too thin and the guy thought they couldn't have the bar put in her ears because of it. My ear lobes and cartilage are really thick, so I had the option of getting it done (didn't because of money). It also means though that my piercings take longer and are sometimes more painful. A lot of places when you get scaffold piercings in do the piercing and put in two earrings to start and then later you switch it out for the bar. I don't know if the place you are planning to go does that. Also, I hope you are planning to get it done with a needle and not a gun. Good luck!
I think all piercing holes heal finally, even the infected ones if you don't give up. Infection doesn't by itself significally hurt at least.
But my experience with a single piercing in the upper part of ear: it is very disturbing to sleep on that ear. It's worse at first and mine got infected and therefore the open wound tender time was longer. I imagine it's even worse if you try to wear a single bar through two holes. So observe your sleeping habits. If you sleep on that ear - take two separate studs for the healing time and better yet something round and soft.
If you can find a small fake-piercing earring or just some circular piercing that stays around the upper part edge of you ear then you can try to sleep with that to get an idea what I am talking about.
But if you want that piercing then you will survive it and it gets better once healed. And you can take the thing off for night when it has healed.

Whatever you decide the holes will need healing time before you can wear the scaffold bar through the piercing, It's easier to access to take care of them too.
If you have sensitive skin a saline solution might suit you better than hydrogen peroxide. Whatever you use, kx250rider is right, cleanliness is key to hasslefree healing.
If you go to a reputable piercing place they will be more than happy to explain everything to you and answer any questions. If you are worried about the way any piercings are healing, a real professional will feel a duty of care towards you and will have no problems checking it out for you and giving advice/reassurance. After all, it's their job!

well are you talking a regular ear peircing?.........that should not be a problem unless you forget to clean it once a day or if you got it caught on something and it got ripped out that would probably hurt like hell.

Granted your advice is probably better.
EEK! A dull paper clip made of God knows what kind of metal...
! Many people don't get infections easily, but some get them too easily... Prudence is the key here.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pierced (several you see, and some you don't), and I can say that the key to trouble-free healing is cleanliness. Ears have bad circulation as compared to nipples and other things we pierce, so you MUST not allow any infection to begin. That means wash carefully every day PLUS after any exposure to dirt & germs, and after gym, etc. Keep some hydrogen peroxide on hand (and plenty of paper towels to keep the peroxide off your clothes), and dab the piercings with a Q-tip if you can't shower right then. Hibiclense is another good piercing cleaning soap. It's used in operating rooms, and is probably the best. Otherwise, regular antibacterial liquid soap (NOT designer soaps with lotions, crystals or abrasives; OUCH) will be OK. Lube the jewelry and work in around with antibiotic ointment every day for at least a week.
Be sure that the piercer is using pure 316L stainless steel or pure titanium for the piercing jewelry, and that it's finely polished like a mirror. Any roughness or dull finish, and it will seize up in the hole and cause pain & bleeding. Titanium is best, albeit costly. It's much lighter than steel, and is just about allergy-proof. I have titanium horse shoe barbells in my nipples, and they're 4ga, and I've had one of the piercings for over 20 years no problem. The other one is newer; about 3 years, and no problem there either. My ears are scalpelled at 7/8" (24mm).
And the other cardinal rule on all piercings: DON'T go too small!!!! A tiny piercing will get infected much easier than a big hole. I speak of personal experience.

As long as you take care of it properly i don't see any problem with it
The pain only lasts for few hours after getting it pierced.
I dont have an industrial but I do have a cartilage piercing.
It did take a little longer to heal compared to an earlobe piercing but there wasnt any problem.
Good luck!

Post subject: Will a scaffold piercing affect my studies in my exam year??
I am 18 and doing my exams this year, and I was wondering whether I should get it done now, or wait till after the exams? Like would the soreness of the piercing be so bad that it might distract me from studying? My mother keeps harping on about this, but she is so old-fashioned so I don't really listen to her, but I decided to ask here just in case, because I really don't want to end up in hospital in June with my ear being really infected and/or worse getting amputated and end up missing my exams over a piercing.
So what should i do?
