I always make sure I have my iPod with me 'cause the background music in my gym is ultra annoying 150bpm Euro crap like Bruno's Funkyzeit theme music and just in case there's nothing on TV. Actually last aerobics class I overheard (I was still doing my thing and they were setting up) was Katy Perry's "California Girls" in 150BPMness. I don't know, I'd probably prefer the 150BPM euro stuff for a couple weeks over the normal "ALL THE SINGLE LADIES PUT A RING ON IT" kinda stuff that normally gets played at my gym. Now my gym is starting to play a generic 80s music station, though, thank goodness.
It's perfectly normal.
Can't blame anyone who does; the gym at my university only plays music from a really crappy radio station whose main appeal is teenage girls.

I always have my iPod with me when I go to the gym. Not only does it block out all the other people around, it also provides a soundtrack to my workout. For example, I have a bunch of songs from the Rocky movies on there and while I'm running, I feel more motivated like I'm mimicking the training montages in the movie. Sounds corny, but it helps me through the rough patches and to press on. Only downside is that not all of my running songs make for good songs for when I'm doing weights.
Don't worry, I listen to Fist of the North Star music while lifting weights. Especially the Highlord power metal cover of "Tough Boy."
I especially like the Highlord cover of the Evangelion theme. It's pretty sweet.

I go to the gym, but I can't handle phones very well...
I can't deal with accessories... watches, rings... I feel like throwing them away in minutes. It's tactile related, irks me.
=(
Not sure if it's a personal quirk or anything related to possible asperger's.

I always do. Plus I bring a book to read. I need a lot of motivation to keep working out.

UPDATE:
I just figured out how to put music on my micro SD card (and therefore my phone).
My mind is still in boggled-phase, considering how much potential this could have for workouts,
and my ability to ignore people, generally.
Will keep ya posted.
Hey Wiggin,
There are quite a few good quality blutooth earphones on the market designed for wearing while active. I also wear mine while grocery shopping and at work to block out annoying noises in the environment.
Have fun figuring out the new potential of your phone

I always wear a set of plantronics blutooth earphones...can easily be slipped off one ear and not fall off my head if somebody indicates they wish to speak with me, they have superb sound and bass for earphones, have eight hours of listening time, are very comfortable and unobtrusive, and block the music playing at my gym which is -always- popular female artists singing about their vageegees or how rotten men are...which doesn't help my workout mood
I listen to Sepultura, Metallica, Pantera, Korn, the Prodigy...well, a lot of different stuff really...but kinda old...
I was concerned initially with not being able to monitor my own noise output, even though I don't think I'm a 'grunter' at the gym, but I became comfortable with the risk and it became a small concern very quickly...I'm sure I would catch a few weird looks eventually if this became a problem.
Go hard or go home!

I wear them, I like to listen to music while I work out but I don't like the gym's playlist.

Depending on your culture I guess. Where I'm from, I heard of a lot of NTs doing it.

I have these clip on ones I wear.
They're perfect, because I can't work out and wear the earmuff ones,
and the earbuds are all too big for my ears.

it is not weird. I have these headphones for when I go to the gym, best headphones you can get for 12 or dollars that are meant for being on the move. They actually have really good sound. I just put my ipod on shuffle usually. So indie rock: The Killers, Arcade Fire, Black keys, etc.
