Watching THE MASTER right now.

Joaquin Phoenix makes a great rotter. And Hoffaman's pompous character adores Phoenix's mysterious hooch. Which is composed of various deadly toxins, such as lacquer thinner. The two become great friends of sorts, but Hoffman uses him as a guinea pig for his faux Scientology exploitations.

'The Master' would have been so much better if Joaquin Phoenix's character wasn't the focus of the movie. I wish it had been centered around Hoffman's character or literally any other character who I actually cared about and didn't actively dislike. I love Paul Thomas Anderson - 'Boogie Nights' is easily in my Top 50 films and 'Magnolia' isn't far behind - but 'The Master' is definitely at the bottom of my list of his films.

The fact that you like MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS better than this amazes me. Joaquin may be unlikable, but it makes the movie (IMO). This thing is so gritty. No hero's in this film. They are all contemptible. But for me, this is what makes it amusing.

You can have a movie be about an unlikable character, but you need to still be able to make your audience want to watch a movie about that character. I didn't care at all about Joaquin's character...his story didn't interest me. If it was about Hoffman's character, who DID interest and engage me, I would have liked the movie better as a whole.

I think Paddington has become my latest Aspie "obsession" - after seeing the wonderful movie this afternoon with my mother the cuddly little bear's already become my laptop wallpaper and my Amazon cart has the first two books placed in it.

The good thing about this obsession is there's so much material for it to collect and obsess about! :D

I just watched boyhood. I thought it was a very good movie. I know the film was almost 3 hours long but it felt like the time just flew by.
