Last fall, I was seeing a psychologist for something unrelated to this topic. When the issue of coping skills came up, I mentioned in the past I liked reading fiction/books about people who were autistic. I could relate and picked up some of the coping skills. She set back, thought for a moment and said she could probably place me in the "low range" of Asperger's. I filed it away and didn't dip my toes much into that until I could have the time.

I guess lately it has been the time. I am 48 years old male and don't wish to live like I did in the past. Over the past few weeks, I've slowly been doing research and even took a few of the tests. Yep, scored on the low end and I can relate to what I have been reading.

Not sure I really want to go to a real psychologist and get an official confirmation, because I am pretty sure this fits me. Now I am here and adding this site as one of the next steps. I function okay, but I want to do better.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Many of us are self-aware (as opposed to self-diagnosed). Some choose to move on to an official diagnosis, while others realize that they don't need one and accept themselves as they believe they are.

Of course, if there is an educational or governmental reason to seek supports, an official diagnosis would be required. Otherwise, there is no requirement to seek one.

Thanks to those we have either read my post or responded to it. This is all new to me and I am slowly dipping my toes into things. I spent so long not knowing or understanding me-- that I can maybe help others not go through the same things as I did. Had I become more self-aware a long time ago, my life may have turned out significantly different.

I can relate somewhat with the late diagnosis, or even late suspicions. The more self-aware I become, the more cringe-inducing my past then becomes. Welcome!

I don't feel like my past is cringe-worthy anymore. With my diagnosis, I was able to forgive myself and let go of the past. It has been very freeing.

Welcome!

Again, thanks for the support from everyone. This is still all new to me and I am trying to process things... slowly. that is what works best for me. Over the past few weeks I have been sort of informing or enlightening key people in my life over this new realization about myself. That if they want to know me better or have a better handle on me to just do a little research on their own.

I am nowhere near forgiving myself for some of my past mistakes. This doesn't excuse my past or explain it all away. What it does is give clarification and understanding.

I admit I am still in partial denial and a bit angry that it took me so long to put the pieces together. Still, the sooner I get things clear in my head-- the more proactive I can be. I can made the choices and strategies that best work for me. Just a slow process for me...

Support and the occasional swarm of ad bots trying to sell you "real" passports and other "real" products and or services. They're sometimes Korean in origin :o

Alot of times.. after the discovery or realization that one is on the spectrum, it takes a while for it to actually sink in and to become comfortable with it. I am not confident enough in myself to diagnose so I went to a specialist.. and even after she confirmed it, it still took me almost a year to really become comfortable with it.. so I'd say to just give it time.

Even though last Fall, when the therapist suggested that I have Asperger's... I thought: "Yes, it makes sense." But also: "No, this can't be right." I spent most of my life thinking I was a nutcase and in a way that still feels more comfortable than saying I have Asperger's. Maybe I will see a therapist for more insight. I am not comfortable with it and that is okay with me. I know me-- I just sometimes need time to let anything just settle in.
