That was the problem, I understand the installer now. It has created a bootable sub flash drive "image", which means, technically, I can restart my machine and it will start with Linux, if the flash drive is in the machine and I have my start up, set up, to look for it first. Doubt it.

I could walk anyone through this part, now, easy. You can also burn a cd, maybe, dvd for sure, and even install it direct on your machine. You have other questions you have to ask first. Not there yet, I have tons of space, even on my flash drive. You may not. 2 gigs, but they say 4 is better, for the flash drive approach, which is what I will attempt tonight.

Ok, next thing, so far as I know. I'm not overly worried about security, and Linux, so I'm not even going to unplug my machine from the net, before I start up this new thing. The next thing is, typically, and I think mine is, or close, it's a hard drive start up, it won't look for the flash first, which means... I have to hit a certain key during the start up screen, when the machine does it's slow ass thingy, with things you wish would hurry up... I could look in my paper work, huh?, or I could look it up on the putters web site, or google it, or I could hit a bunch of keys that I may, or may not remember from other machines I have owned, worked on, or dreamed of... I vote for the latter, first.

This is the part I always wonder about, well other then the drop down type of startup you will see, if you get lucky and poke the right button, during the right time of the start up...which is never easy to begin with to time, no, the part I wonder about is...why aren't they all the same? Why in the hell couldn't they all get together over at least one thing? You could wish me luck, but no need, I have more beer .

Tanks, not going well, but still on, so not going badly. I have done worse.

Ubuntu, I have nothing good to say about it and have yet to see it.

The suggestions are full of s**t you never should ever touch and take for ever to figure out how to get off of the machine you were trying to get fast and clean (they will load you up with s**t stuff, in other words).... they should know better, but don't, no way to take over the Linux thing, which is what I heard they were trying to do, and not to the favor of those that really do it. Just getting back, had real problems getting my boot drive up, which I still can't and never had a problem with for this long, makes me wonder. Earlier machines and OS'es were easier... I wondering if MS has me locked up? They're asking for OEM's and phone calls? I still think for earlier machines, that are legit, Linux could work, but not so far away as I see, they f*****g blew it, again.

I'll try to burn a "cd", but have no hope either. Later.

I like windows 8, well 8.1, had my very first unexpected shut down the other day and it wasn't a blue screen, have never had one, this was the worst and it was a "hard restart", nothing more, had way worse on XP, many times over. Classic shell, get it and you'll like 8. I hear there is another one too, as good, but think that one costs, pay, I don't care, it works and you will like 8, but... I did things with xp, I never told, had short cuts, well, no one ever knew about...and I got over it. sorta ;p

Not only that, but my Avast (antivirus) went off on the site I was trying to use to download the , pretty much, virus free Linux. So much so, I couldn't shut it down with a typical control-alt- del, key stroke and then, a CClean run, which knocks down most virus to start, I had to run my antivirus. To say I am unimpressed, is an understatement and yet...

I will figure this out. Porn sites are easier to knock down, virus ways. makes me wonder. It's still porn, you just have to screw your head right. I mean I like sex and all of it isn't normal, I guess anyways, because I was never normal to start, but ..... we had a chance with this language thing, computer and someone wasn't as normal as I was... jeezuse no, so they got sick and pissed off everybody else. Humans, what ya gonna do? Start a war? Bet they do. I just want to go to Siberia. (I think my isp is banned in Russia) and if it isn't yet, give me a minute longer. (I hate pissing off isp's in Europe, where they just, Russia, ban then at large, but damn it, I have to speak out, even though I miss a few friends for a while.) I know you know, in other ways.

Don't go where you aren't wanted, unless you will pay the price and if you ask another to come get you, fool, they will and that starts problems that weren't needed. They always told me, we leave no one behind, I knew better and that was cool. Don't be an idiot, we do and that's just fine. Only an idiot thinks that. it was only one of our jobs. If you think for a second we ever thought other wise, think again, but we still knew it :) We try! We'll be back and if you didn't like us the first time,.... you won't again. Understand me, please.

I will say this only once, put another friend on the wall, his name is, William (Bill) Austin, Medic, Vietnam and they won't put it up. agent orange. I will only say this once, he is allowed there, I know him, I knew him, and he was a very good friend and loved by many. Thank you Billy :)

still at it, got into my Bios, yeah!... boo. scares the s**t out of me, never seen anything like it. This is no mom and pop thing anymore. I saw the likes of this coming, a few years ago, but dang!

Still not sure I have a good "bootable flash drive", even though the file is there, or, anything close on a dvd.

I know this can be said in English, simple, has to be, it's only people.

After a month touring around the Brittany area in France, in our motor home, I've settled in back home and had my new computer recased to fit in the desk. Cold start takes ten seconds.

My partner's oscommerce website is coming along, and may go live in a while. It runs on a Raspberry Pi, under the television. Not too bad for a £25 investment. It will run the website on £5 of electricity per year. (Not counting the cost of actually having the broadband itself. :) )

You weren't tempted to stay in France then as we were? The weather has been pretty foul the last few weeks here in Normandy, endless rain. Sounds like you were here during the monsoon season?

Ah no. We came over on 10th March, to two days of fog. Then we had pretty excellent weather, until we came baclk on 10th April. I think the monsoon started about then. ;)

Just bumping around and bumping up the thread. Where is everyone? I'll just see if I can get the chocolate hot-tub warmed up, winter-is-a-commin'.

A little gem I found by Jeff Foxworthy, didn't know where else to post this.

Quote:
By Jeff Foxworthy

If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for entering and remaining in the country illegally ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
?
If you have to get your parents? permission to go on a field trip or to take an aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If you MUST show your identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or check out a library book and rent a video, but not to vote for who runs the government ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If the government wants to prevent stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines that hold more than ten rounds, but gives twenty F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If, in the nation?s largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not one 24-ounce soda, because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If an 80-year-old woman or a three-year-old girl who is confined to a wheelchair can be strip-searched by the TSA at the airport, but a woman in a burka or a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head searched ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If your government believes that the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If a seven-year-old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher is ?cute,? but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government regulation and intrusion, while not working is rewarded with Food Stamps, WIC checks, Medicaid benefits, subsidized housing, and free cell phones ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If the government?s plan for getting people back to work is to provide incentives for not working, by granting 99 weeks of unemployment checks, without any requirement to prove that gainful employment was diligently sought, but couldn?t be found ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If you pay your mortgage faithfully, denying yourself the newest big-screen TV, while your neighbor buys iPhones, time shares, a wall-sized do-it-all plasma screen TV and new cars, and the government forgives his debt when he defaults on his mortgage ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If being stripped of your Constitutional right to defend yourself makes you more ?safe? according to the government ? you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

What a country!

I never used to like the open ended ness of this thread but it seems just right now, maybe ageing has given me new insight. I might do the topic thing again, but work, writing, reading and now travelling (May 2015) are priorities. Nice to visit the old neighbourhood. 8)
