To a person who lives outside of a certain area, everyone within that area will appear to have an accent. You being from WA and all, are probably picking up on the midwestern (northern IN) or southern accent (southern IN).

I believe that it would fall under a Midwestern accent.

interesting, i wasn't aware a state could have both a midwestern and southern accent.

i'm not really sure what a midwestern accent would be supposed to sound like, though i know what a southern one does because since this is a navy town, we get some people from southern states stationed up here where i live.

I used to live in Indiana and there are definitely a couple of accents going on there. There's the Midwest one - just sort of vanilla American, and then there's a mild southern one that starts as the land gets more hilly south of Bloomington. That's what I noticed anyway.

i've never really understood what "vanilla" means in that kind of context :?
not really sure what that would sound like to compare.
if anything, maybe hers is a bit midwestern then :P ? she lives roughly 50 miles south of Indianapolis.

Vanilla meaning like what you usually hear on television. It's the same accent that most newscasters and President Obama have. It's what's considered the standard American accent in terms of diction.

States can't talk and therefore don't have accents but every individual has an accent.

It's kind of like the Northumbrian accent of Creedonian English. They use words like don'cha and Jeet Yet?

I have distant family which lives near Lafayette. They sound quite different to me, not sure if its sort of Southern or Midwest
