doesn't seem very natural...about the same as when I try too hard to make and keep eye-contact with someone. Too much is just as off-putting as too little.

Yes, also is this kind of lack of eye contact even a problem? Even for NTs, the positioning of the camera and the screen ensures that your eyes won't be properly pointed at the audience anyways. If you need/want better, you'd get a teleprompter setup that allows you to look at the camera directly from time to time while still seeing your notes. If you don't need the notes, then it's just glance at the camera as appropriate and call it good.
