Why do neurotypicals become stupid as they enter adulthood?

But of course, the more I read, the more it seemed that in quite a few cases the reasons were more typical. You know, ignorance, arrogance, unwarranted self importance and stuff like that. Because of this I've come to a conclusion that I was wrong about the tolerance. It seems that people with Asperger's are no different from those so called normal people in terms of illogical thinking and vast generalisations. These traits are as common here as they are in any other message boards I frequent. I guess it is true that some (ignorant) people just hate what they can not understand: these kind of threads are proof of it. Congratulations, in terms of bigotry, you are no different from NT's. I admit now that it was naive to think that people with Asperger's would be more tolerant than others. People are people, after all.
By the way, English is not my first language, so I apologise if I sound clumsy.
Please do not take this thread as an indicator of the general feelings of the members of Wrong Planet. There are very few people on here with that attitude. The vast majority of the people on here will quite rightly disagree with the OP and the member who resurrected this very old thread.

Hi SrRes, welcome to WrongPlanet!
Yes. People with autism can be illogical; and they can and do make generalisations.
Maybe many of us are a little more tolerant, but I think you expect a bit much from us as an online community, not to have some members occasionally poke fun at the NT "status quo". I would restate your remark "People are people, after all." as "We are human"
No, I don't think your English was clumsy at all

^ I got that
I worded my reply like I did because I'm myself am not above posting tongue in cheek remarks in a "why do NTs do X..." thread.
It's not my real feelings, and it's not out of bigotry or even misfeeling towards NTs, it's just getting frustration out in a place where this will be mostly understood as such.

I find these threads to be really annoying too. Furthermore, they do no service to the educating of not autistic people about autism. WP is a very nice community.

I have no idea, honestly.

I've been debating with DH for years about "stupidity". He tend to think people who are not logical or reasonable as stupid, I always call them "different". Sure I don't understand them and don't know why they do things to ruin their lives or waste their time, it doesn't mean they don't have their reasons. It's just easy to push whatever you don't understand into the "stupid" category, instead of trying to learn and understand them. Kinda immature if you ask me.
A lot of the so called "stupid" activities such as drinking or drugs might make people feel good for a while. If you are the type who love good feelings the consequences is probably worth it. How many people have fallen in love quickly and have a whirlwind romance, later breakup and not regret it? It's not exactly efficient or prudent, but I'm sure the intense feelings caused by chemicals make them feel it's well wroth the heartbreak. Just because I can't imagine it doesn't mean it doesn't exist or doesn't matter. I always tell my kids people are all different. Some might be very very different from us indeed. It doesn't make them bad, evil, weird, stupid... or whatever. They're just different.
I get the feeling that a lot of people here feel that people don't understand them and the world doesn't accept them. This is probably true. However it's not other people's responsibility to understand or accept you. You've got to figure out how to fit in if it matters to you that much. Starting with a "us vs. them" attitude won't help. Respect everyone and they'll tolerate you much more easily.

I think examples would help clarify this question.
Oh, they drink and drive, pour hot coffee on themselves intentionally in order to sue the coffee shop etc. NT adults are often some pretty disgusting individuals.
It just sounds like you don't like certain people.

In fact this whole thread has been sleeping peacefully since June 2010 and going by the topic, that's probably a good thing...

And it's confusing, evidently.

Young adults are stupid because most seem to think that drinking and getting drunk is great, and this sometimes can run all the way through one's life, but when you get to a certain age in life, most people start to realise that clubbing and dancing and drinking in a noisy bar all night isn't so great, especially after they settle down with kids or in their own home and have to work to live and have other responsibilities to worry about.
That is probably the main reason why I can relate to older people better than I can other youngsters of my age.
