It said that the movie was based from real events. I assume The Noblets were really the Smurfs but what confused me is that the movie supposedly took place in the 70's and 80's. How could Max have had AS if the term wasn't around until 1994? The term "aspie" also definatly wasn't around in the 70's or 80's either and Max wears a shirt that reads "aspies for freedom" in one scene.

Which I assume was supposed to be this fourm: http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/

Anyway, was the date just a typo? Did they really mean 90's and 2000s?

the date was not a typo, it's I think an intentional anachronism

I think you are correct. This bothered me too, but I let it go.

I was confused too. I know AS was known in the 80's too because the term was coined in 1981 but very few doctors knew about it. The criteria for it didn't even exist then and the first one came out in 1989 followed by Gillberg's in 1991 and then the DCM 10 or whatever in 1992.

"Based on true events" doesn't mean "this is a documentary."

Well, when they first became pen pals, Mary was 8 years old. When Max was diagnosed with Aspergers, Mary was well into adulthood.
