After having been on this forum for a week I've got the impression is that nobody, neither us nor doctors really understand what Asperger is.

There seems to be a cause - namely a neurological cause (X).

And certain symptoms (Y1, Y2, Y3 etc.) seem to correlate with each other and seem to correlate with the neurological cause.

But how is the equation? If you denote "leads to" as >> and "may lead to" as >
is it then for example:

X >> Y1
X >> Y2
X >> Y3
etc

or is it
X > Y1
X > Y2
X > Y3
etc

or is it

X >> Y1 > Y2
X >> Y1 > Y3
etc

And if there only is a "may lead to" what are the covariates in the relationship?

And in the 3rd set of equations, which symptom is the primary symptom Y1 and which are merely potential follow up symptoms?

I guess these questions are all unanswered so far, right?

You may wonder why I bother. The fact is that I'm uncertain of myself, I might be an Aspie or not, and being uncertain of what Asperger is doesn't really take away my uncertainty.

Then you might say, get yourself an official diagnosis. But if Asperger is not clear in itself, I would just as well feel uncomfortable with a diagnosis (either positive or negative).

Do you understand?

In order to compensate for all this doubt I'll also post another subject with a more positive contribution. After all I remain optimistic.

Hi MegaAndy,

In the end that's exactly what I mean.

But here the doubt starts:
suppose it works for me like:

focus on my own preoccupations > lack of practising social skills > social anxiety

would that imply that I can't put "Asperger >" before it?

I mean, I'd be fine with that conclusion, but I think currently nobody is able to draw that conclusion.

so are you implying that the core of these symptoms is not aspergers but is the first of the symptoms that causes the others

The psychopathologies that you are describing are merely the result of a lack of treatment for the syndrome. Aspergers itself is a disabiity more than a psychopathology.
