I am a film maker. I have made over 20 short films in the last few years and a couple have taken a couple awards away as well.

I also have Asperger's.

I have felt the need, in recent days, to depart from fiction and delve into a documentary project, but have been searching for a focus for the project.

Last night, it was pointed out that the autistic spectrum is rarely covered in a positive light and (as far as I know) never from truly within...

I am considering doing this...

Thoughts? Feedback?

This was done for Kirsten and Jack but that's their story.

I don't know if you're thinking of a more general documentary or maybe specifics, such as the anguish of being locked out of normal life by this block on the interaction that seems to go on between everyone else. A series of that type could possibly help people, especially if the low-grade morons out there were made to watch them; part of a school lesson, perhaps?

I'm no media expert but it doesn't come across immediately as a fail.

shatora: Not sure There is enough material for a general series. I am a realist. I know it has to be entertaining to get attention, and while I could fill hours of airtime with this... I honestly think a one shot would be best.

Mithos: the encouragement is appreciated. But it needs to have community support or it won't work.

Wouldn't need to be hours of stuff, some short 10-15 minute episodes each covering one aspect could help a lot of people. Or even 5-10 minutes? Think of pamphlet/brochure stuff but made for video.

There are plenty of people doing just that... http://www.youtube.com/theanmish

If I do something like this, it needs to be in the traditional format. 22 or 44 minute episodes for a series or 90+minutes for a documentary.

Some possibilities are:
A documentary about the Autistic Self Advocacy Network
A documentary about Autistic artists/authors/musicians
A documentary about Autistic couples
A documentary about Autreat

Maybe do a series on all of these?
44 minute episodes would be the minimum.
Any of these subjects could fill a 90 minutes documentary.

If you like any of these, or a combination of them, then let me know. I could get you in touch with all major figures within the Autistic community.

If you have ideas for other subjects, let me know as well.

Thank you for this initiative.

I like the idea for artists... as an artist myself - it has a certain appeal.

So here are some Autistic artists worth considering:
Painter Katie Miller: http://www.marieclaire.com/world-report ... ale-artist
Painter Nanne Binghi Barkdull: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nanne-Bin ... 9133298080
Painter Michael Madore: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/0 ... 94350.html
Cartoonist Leironica Hawkins: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/11/nyreg ... -book.html

I could get you in touch with any of them.

Would you consider Autistic musicians as well?

I think you should include female aspies in your documentary. People see aspergers as a male disorder which is absolute BS.
I could probably make a good documentary but have no money thanks to capitalism.
