I've always been told that i have no idea what irony is. whenever i go "ha! ironic!" they go "no it isn't". I don't think i know what irony really is or perhaps i just can't tell when irony is happening. does anyone know?

When the outcome of something is the exact opposite of what would be expected or what was intended.

Don't worry - most other people don't either.

If you have the time, have a little read this satire article.

It gives a correct idea of irony, despite it's humor: http://www.cracked.com/funny-1085-irony/

Even Alanis Morrisette is confused about the meaning of "ironic"!

Can you give an example of something that you called "ironic" that folks told you was not ironic

According to Alanis Morrisette "when it rains on your wedding day" its "ironic". But that is NOT irony.

But if you and your fiance both live in rainy Seattle, and you two book an outdoor Venue in Nevada to have your wedding and reception a year in advance to escape the rain, and then on the day of the event there is rare deluge on the place in Nevada (and its clear and sunny that same day in Seattle)then THAT would be "ironic".

It is a bit subjective. But I agree with your friends that if someone buys another person chocolates without knowing that the second person was a rare soul who didnt like chocolate- it would be a bummer-but it wouldnt be "ironic".

But if you learned that the heir to the Hershey fortune, and owner of the biggest chocolate empire on the planet was allergic to chocolate, and died from an allergic reaction to eating it for the first time then I would classify THAT as being "ironic".

Well, according to Carrie's dad on the "King of Queens", it is something made of iron.
I love that show!
