They are being poisoned with strychnine. I don't live in Canada but I find this very upsetting. What harm have the wolves or any animals done to anyone to deserve this?

With any luck, maybe Harper will accidentally ingest some.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. I don't know why people hate other forms of life so much.

Umm, how are wolves a threat or menace to tar sands? Or is there an ulterior motive to the article?

They aren't, exactly. Tar sands development means loss of caribou habitat, they mean to destroy a great deal with new development like the pipeline. So we have to kill off most of the wolves too, so the few caribou we plan to leave alive can survive.

Using poison for that is bizarre. At their body weight, there aren't many non-military substances that will kill them quickly. Do they have a way to keep other predators/scavengers from eating the bait or the poisoned wolf carcasses?

Why not do what most states do and issue population control hunting tags for a special hunting season?

It's not a nice method of killing, but it might be warranted if there is no other option. Wolves are not creatures that would happily walk up to you by themselves so you could shoot them. Also, it's not very different from what happens to rats or mice - you put some flavoured poison near them, they take it with them to their hiding places and poison their offspring before dying.

Having said that, the reason these wolves have to die is slightly upsetting.

Thats screwed up as hell.......not only is it probably not a pleasent way to die, but what about all the other animals this poison might effect?

Yeah so maybe people would have to put some effort into hunting them.....hell I'd rather they be hunted than poisoned, provided there really are too many in the area or whatever and it's a problem. But poison? screwed up....and I don't kill rats/mice with poison. Cats work well...

Probably too underpopulated in that area and too many wolves. Besides, they want this all done pronto, before anyone gets a chance to say "hey, wait a minute"

Also, the Harper cabinet is lobotomy central.

They've completely misidentified the problem and are poisoning the wrong animals. It's oil tycoons that need to be poisoned  We need to wean ourselves off this substance that is killing the environment like no other human activity, except perhaps for the massive rain forest destruction and of course our uncontrolled breeding.

The Harper Government: Ruining my country one day a time. Any decision made by the conservative party is guaranteed to be supported by less than 30% of Canadians, so please do not judge us all on this f*****g idiot, he is no prime minister, he is the American colonial magistrate
