Yeah this is along the lines of what I was thinking about the trailer. Adam seems more blatant/autistic than subtle/AS. And I'm afraid that it may lead to even more accusations of 'You don't have that!!' because people will think that is what AS is like.

*Shrug* I suppose its impossible to do without stereotyping and being blatant. There's no real way to make the audience feel how it really feels.

Although a realistic AS film with a subtle character would be very boring.
I think the best portrayal of AS and autsim is the film "the magnificent 7" with helena bonham carter about that woman with 4 autistic sons, it manages to be quite blatant but still realistic enough at the same time.

I wish the film would focus more on other issues of AS. It seems that the film only portrays obsessions and social awkwardness.

I'm sure I will see the movie.

I'll be happy if it helps the general public see that people like me are actually real people and not view us as untouchables unless we pretend to be like them.

I doubt that anyone, being introduced to AS via this film, would be able to connect this Adam character with any of us. And if you happen to start being more open about your AS, they're not going to believe you, since you're not like Adam.

I can't remember who said this first, but: If you've seen one aspie, you've seen one aspie.

Eh? He appears so mild in the trailer that you could barely notice he has an ASD.

A realistic plot line would have a guy sitting alone playing Minesweeper for the first half of the movie. In the second half he stares at a wall.

it's late at night, and for some reason, after reading this, i've got the giggles.

I thought The Da Vinci code did a pretty good job of it...not that I'm saying the main character is on the spectrum (though he's obviously a savant), but I thought the scene where he was on the elevator was a really good example of autism...how he got really nervous and the camera showed you how he was focusing on all these tiny little details to try to get his mind off of the flashbacks.

But yeah, for the most point, modern American movies have to exaggerate everything to get their point across. Because they think audiences are dumb and can't figure anything out by themselves :x

Looks like Mozart & the Whale Part 2.

I'll see it when it opens in Portland. :D

However, Portland is a VERY anti-autism city,
so most papers here will be give it mixed-to-bad reviews.

Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne make a really cute couple in the movie.

I really want to see this movie. I never think there will be a portrayal of AS or Autism that everyone agrees is "correct"... Because, if you make a character out of all the traits that your "average" aspie has, then people are going to call it a two-dimensional stereotype that isn't much of an individual. And then if you make a very individual character who also happens to have AS, people are going to complain that it doesn't focus on enough of the different "symptoms" or that the character isn't a good representation of the average Aspie. Then if they focus on someone who happens to be particularly maladaptive, it's seen as over-the-top.

I liked Mozart and the Whale. Yeah, i thought the characters weren't representative of your "average" aspies... some symptoms were particularly exaggerated and stuff, but there are probably SOME aspies out there who are very similar to those characters in many ways, too. You can't expect to completely relate to an aspie character in every way just because they're an aspie.. Because there should be more to the character than that, especially if you want an interesting movie. Plus, everyone has a different "set" of aspie characteristics. Like on The Big Bang Theory, i don't really relate to Sheldon as much as a lot of people here seem to. Sure, i never know what to say in a social situation, and i will start stating a bunch of facts about this or that pretty often... But i don't turn into a crazy person if someone sits in my chair, i try pretty hard to not come off as stuck-up or un-concerned with other peoples' feelings, and i don't insist that everyone do exactly what i want to do all the time. But, he is an interesting character, not just a flat representation of your
"average aspie," whatever that even is. He's an individual who probably is an aspie, and there are some things people are going to relate to him about and others they won't.

I got the giggle too, more like chuckles, actually...but it's so late that it's early. I can't win Minesweeper, it's so frustrating.

In that trailer Adam looks soooo mildly AS to me. Two AS moments in that film, the rest is just him being eccentric and awkward.

And about that Adam = represents AS spectrum that's more severe: I think not.

Nobody would believe that I have AS if they saw Adam.

Though my being different is obvious all the time.

I'm not awkward, obsessed and eccentric, I'm just autistic. Totally different thing, thankgod.

Looks like a cool and entertaining film though.

Eh, awkward, obsessive and eccentric ain't that bad a thing. :)

(Those things by themselves an ASD doesn't make, but it's highly associated with the lack of social and emotional reciprocity and the narrow interest/s in the higher-functioning people. This is where the common depiction comes from. People think that that dude from The Big Bang Theory has AS; nope, he's just of the awkward, eccentric and geeky make, as his social reciprocity is normal, and his interest isn't disabling.)

Aww, he looks cute.
I dunno, I can kind of relate to him; the way he talks, being that obsessed about things (I would have done something similar to cleaning her windows), the way he talks and talks about his obsession and not knowing what to do in an emotional situation.
I'm glad I've never told anyone when I was sexually excited.

I'll definitely see the movie.
