I don't think I was ever obsessed with horses. I mean I love horses, but my sister and mom (both NT) are the horse people. You know, 4-H Horse and pony project, riding horses, living the country lifestyle. I got dragged along and I hated most of it but when it came time for the county fair, the horse stuff didn't seem to bad.

It's funny. I think that most girls (and some guys too) have some sort of obsession or interest in horses. I think it has to do with the fact that while most guys are into the whole car thing with having something that they can be responsible for, keeping it clean and of course the whole riding thing, I think the girls feel left out so the girls turn to horses instead. I mean they can keep it clean, ride them, be responsibe for them. Anyways, that's just my thinking.

Also, you know something funny. If you ever go to like a horse show or anything, look around. There are very few guys there. It's almost all girls.

Hi Punkycat

I worked as a horse groom for 3 years and I must say I don't like horse people at all. I never got along well with them. I think many of them are indeed very dominating, often in an excessive, unnecessary way, and enjoying it, sometimes even abusive kinds of people. Such people always repelled me. Actually they're the reason I used to hate horses when I was a kid. I looked at how horses let themselves be treated by such people, what they let people do with them, allow stupid little people, often little girls to turn them into puppets, to command their every move, I looked at the people and their behavior, their spurs, whips, their knee-high leather boots and I found that domination-lust and -sport perverted and revolting. And I still do.
But the horses are both innocent and totally O.K. I think they need to be saved from such people and such "sport". Just like the kids you described.
One day I heard a girl talk about how a farmer castrated young colts without anesthetics and that's the first time I thought: Wait, maybe it's not the horse's faults that they are made to be and behave like slaves. Maybe they are the victims in all this. Then I went out to get to know them myself as a horse groom and I found all my suspicions true: People were egoistic and mean, often without even realizing it, and the horses the innocent victims. That's why I could never work as a horse groom for someone else again. I feel like a humanitarian in a concentration camp when I do.

I used to hate dogs for the same reason.

My best friend is HFA and she has a horse, and has been riding since before I met her. They're not really for me though. I mean they're fun to ride and they're neat animals, but not more or less neat than other animals.

Was anyone ever scared of riding horses?

Yes because of the other people around, but not of the actual horse itself. The first time I started riding I was a little aprehensive because it was so high off the ground but at my second lesson I LOVED it. I was NEVER scared of the horses themselves but then I was never scared of any animal. People were what caused problems for me.

That was the same for me, I was terrified of all the people there but not of the horse. When I was ten I was thrown off and broke my hip and for a few years was a little apprehensive to ride, but I got back on fairly quickly. I don't even mind being thrown off anymore, but horse people kind of scare me. 8O

I've never been interested in horses, but I was obsessed with elephants when I was five-eight. After that I got a computer obsession :)

Guilty :)
I started horseback riding at 7 or 8, when my mother decided i was "too isolated and needed to get away from my books a bit", and i got extremely into it. I did all sorts of horse camps, cow boy camps (yes, with cattle lol) and indian camp in the mountain, pure awesomeness, it lasted around 8 years i think.

I've read in a couple of places that it's stereotypical for girls with Aspergers to be obsessed with horses. I was and I mentioned this to my psychologist and he said is was a dead give away! I was so obsessed with horses I could draw an extremely good likeness from memory (of course I've only ever ridden a horse twice in my life). I still have a soft spot for them (I even have drew a couple last year) but I'm no longer obsessed. I have a soft spot for dogs but didn't obsess over them like I did with horses. So what is with this stereotype? What is it about horses that attracts Aspie girls (over other animals or other possibilities) and any female Aspies out there - were you ever obsessed with horses?

I completely obsessed on horses, too! I had no idea it was a stereotype for Asperger's in girls. I just liked what I liked.

I just looked back through this. I already answered it.

Oh well...

I was obsessed with horses, yes, but also wolves. As a child I loved horses. I collected horse figurines, wore horse tails. (I even bought a fake horse tail at a furry convention a couple years back!) I always wanted one, but haven't ever had the money. I volunteered at a hippotherapy(sp?) stable for a while too! My obsession with wolves and other canines is likely to be related to my therianthropy, which is in itself probably related to me being Aspergers. This is why everyone says I act like a dog. I even growl, snarl, whine, whimper, and yip in my sleep!

Do I think that Aspergers girls stereotypically love horses? Yes, but I don't think it's exclusive to horses! Aspergers people in general, seem to love animals, and seem to have a better understanding of animals. Like Temple Grandin has expressed, Autistic people's and animals' minds seem to work similarly.

No, never understood the horse obsession. I was really into wolves for a few years, but that was the extent of my animal interests. I also knew an aspie girl who was so into cats it was scary. She would go around making cat sounds at people in the hallway at school. That was rather bizzare.

I can understand someone like that, because that's what I experienced. I enjoyed the world of animals and pretending I belonged there. I pretended to be horses, dogs, cats, cougars. I romped around the backyard on all fours. I acted like a cougar in the house and tried to make that noise, but it never sounded quite like the cougar.
