Pros and cons of being yourself

Pro: People won't judge you as wierd if you can somehow hide some or all of your AS symptoms
Con: You run the risk of heading into territory where, once you're established in a relationship and let yourself be yourself, of having the other person run crying to friends and family saying "It's like they're a totally different person!"

Personally, I can't stand the idea of NOT being myself. I used to get some weirdass conflicting signals. On the one hand, I'm told I should 'be myself' but on the other hand, from the exact same source, that I should stop acting 'wierd'. What the hell? Don't they know the two are interlinked?!

Most likely it is a one-dimensional view of personality which causes that.
And probably also a long internal list of 'shoulds' and 'should nots'.
