A$perger'$ Diagno$i$ Co$t topic

Lots of dollar signs up there. Same with reality.

Mine was quite pricey ( $2500 Canadian) in 2008. It was a reevaluation (I used to regard it erroneously as a rediagnosis). Both times (the first was about $1500 Canadian) it was paid for out of funds to which I contributed (College Insurance and Employment Insurance). A wait for a free psychiatrist is five years for this diagnosis, and there is no certainty that a shrink will have expertise in adult AS. My psychologist trained with Tony Attwood in Australia and has extensive experience with Adults and children on the AS Spectrum.

My GP thinks AS is a crock, and refuses to accept a diagnosis that is not done in early childhood. 8O

I went to see a British GP a decade ago after reading a book on ADD, from cover to cover, on a transatlantic flight (contradiction indeed?)

I seemed to light up all the bulbs and so I thought, naively, I would get the 'opinion' of a (British) GP.

I explained the/my symptoms (clearly the first she had heard of it) and when I had the stupidity to mention that it affects maybe 20% of all children/adults she casually closed her note book and remarked that this was 'normal', in a scene that was eerily like the exorcist just before Regan's head starts to rotate and she 'does that thing' with the cross.

I was referred for 'evaluation' and two German sounding professionals concluded that.....................they were sensing a lot of........

Dissatisfaction and Disappointment............

Too f***ing right.

First of all the problem 7 year old child (me) is 'bored cos he's a bit brainy' and now, twenty years later, I am disappointed and dissatisfied.

I was living in England at the time............of course I was dissatisfied and disappointed................

About $2,000 here from most I've asked... for a medical diagnosis at least. Psychologists will give a diagnosis during regular therapy and stuff like that sometimes, but it's not considered to be of much value when it comes to getting anything as far as real therapy to help overcome social issues.

So less if you don't want any help or feel a need for a real diagnosis to have on your files, but LOTS if you want any form of social therapy or anything of that nature.

I was told $1300 by one place, and $1700 by another, with a warning that it could be more if the psychologist needed to see me more than the usual allotted time. I was also told it could be less if he needed to see me less, but that was unusual. Basically, you pay to take the tests, and it's an hourly rate after that, but I forgot what the hourly rate is, I just know what it usually runs. I cannot afford that. Which is ironic to me that the aspie/autie that can't hold a job, won't have insurance is probably the one that's not gonna get a diagnosis, because of lack of funds, which is why they would want one in the first place. You can't apply for benefits without a diagnosis of some sort.

But, recently I've learned that you can get diagnosed by your local state university in the psych dept. I do not know if it's an official diagnosis. Recently, I had to get my son tested again (I guess they wanted to make sure he was still autistic  ) for the state to continue services. They sent me to our local university, and it only costs $30. That's where I'll be going soon to be evaluated by the same lady. If it's official enough for the state, it's official enough for me, and to be honest, it's all that I can afford.

It cost me a couple thousand. I've paid that for just a speech evaluation also. Anything extensive costs at least that.

I actually paid (or my insurance) over $1400 for the first visit with a Developmental Pediatrition, and I got the most lame report I have ever gotten. That didn't even include the evaluations she wanted me to do.

It's crazy.

Ok,

A lot more reasonable and affordable outside of the US.

That's great news for the 95% of us who dont live in the US.

The real question is.............do 95% of Aspies actually live IN the US?

All of the alien space ships seem to land there after all

hmmm.... poll time? But then how do we know whether or not it's accurate with how many may be undiagnosed out there or don't know about Wrong Planet or just don't go on it... along with how many will see it and just not vote as happens in other polls... lol.

In Sweden it's covered by your general health insurance and thus free of charge, but there aren't enough experts so you either rely on a general psychologist to give it a guess or wait a year or two to get the full work-up with cognitive profile and all the other tests.

I went private with some funding from a family member and it cost around the equivalent of 4000 USD. The were great though, alongside Gillberg they're the best in the country. My son was evaluated through regular channels, but they work faster with kids as they're a higher priority (rightly so IMO). It would have cost me the same to do it privately for him.

Since the wiring does not change, the GP is under a misapprehension

$1200-1500 here in my part of the US to be assessed by an adult ASD specialized psychologist.

I'm going to see a neuropsychologist for a 3-4 hour assessment in a few weeks. I have no idea what the price tag will be. luckily it will be covered by insurance.

I have a dx from my therapist and psychiatrist, but neither of them feel they are qualified to figure out where on the spectrum I am, so I suppose my dx could change to NLD or just PDD after I see the specialist. we'll see.

In the midwestern US one place said 1000 and another 4000. I can't afford that. I get care for my mood disorder for free now, and my therapist who works with Aspies says I am really not one, so I'll believe him for now.

About $3k here in Southern California.

I made some phone calls, the procedure is quite long, about 10-12 hours over several visits. If it really takes that long and the doctor is an expert in the field, the amount is about right.

People who post much lower amounts are likely living in places where such diagnosis is subsidized.

Well my diagnosis ($400 + $120 AUD) was performed at the Minds and Hearts Centre run by Dr Tony Attwood. I would guess they know what they are on about. Assesment took about 3 hours from memory and involved a thorough interview and some testing.
