Does the WP forum have any features with which to parse LaTeX-code and to include the output in a message - as an image? It would make discussing actual math/phys (of which there's still surprisingly little here) a whole lot easier. Of course there are special science forums for that, but it would certainly make this particular part of the forum way cooler!

There's no Latex features in this forum but I believe there's a program you can use make png images of Latex equations. These images, of course, can then be posted on the site if you have some other place on the internet to upload them. Ask Lau, I think this question has been asked before.

Nice reference.

There are choices, as to what is acceptable for your purposes. Does the LaTeX source get processed on your local machine, WP's server or some third party server?

The huge advantage, of LaEqEd, is that the entire LaTeX process is done just once, on your local machine. Thereafter, you merely need somewhere to host a PNG image. (A major bonus is that anyone who saves a copy of the image can then edit the source code which is still embedded within it - unless you remove that source.)

Some time back, another WP member was using a nice website that allowed you to put a (reasonably complex) link in your post, and the website responded with the rendered image. It was all very nice - until that site stopped providing the facility.

The other option would be to have the LaTeX processed on WP's server. With caching, that probably wouldn't be too onerous, until off-site linking started exploiting us?

Thanks for all your replies! I'll look into the options you offered. It would still be nice though if you could just enter [latex] bla bla [/latex] into your message, like in some other forums.

I think lau is referring to this site: http://mathurl.com/help/ where you input your LaTex source code and then it generates an image of the equation that is placed between [img][img] tags and is linked to the mathurl site.

The only other method I can think of for posting complex equations if you are using Windows is to use
Open Office.org Math and paste the generated object file into Gimp onto a transparent background and then save as an png image file uploaded to an image hosting service and then posted like any other image.
