Old Dick Tracy.

I tried reading the new ones and...eh...sad  The Max Allan Collins years were probably my favorite.

The Far Side

When I was in the 8th grade I had an English teacher who was obsessed with it! She would pass the paper around the room and make everyone read it. Then she would call on a random person and make them explain the cartoon to the class!

I think "cow tools" finally drove her insane...

PS

For an old school adventure strip, you can't beat Lee Falk's Phantom, aka

"The Man Who Cannot Die", "Guardian of the Eastern Dark" and "The Ghost Who Walks"

Pearls before swine! I absolutely love this comics. The link above should get you to this last Saturday's strip. My blackberry has issues adding photos.

I suppose for nostalgia value it's got to be Peanuts.
I used to cut out comic strips from the papers and make books out of them. Peanuts was always my favourite.

Runners up would be comparatively obscure:

1. The Wizard of Id
2. BC
3. Crock

And an honourable mention to ... Dog Transluscent!

The most awesome comic in the world is Footrot Flats! :D

It's by an artist in New Zealand and is about life on the farm, down in Kiwiland.
It's SO funny, also sweet, poignant, and utterly unique.
I love 'the dog' and Wal and Cooch and the rest of the gang.
It's a bit like Calvin and Hobbes(my other top favourite), but more gutsy and slapstick.

A few random strips :

There's also a movie, but it lost A LOT in the transfer to the big screen.

i love calvin and hobbes. i first got into it in 4th or 5th grade when my uncle gifted me the Authoritative. for a while i seriously thought that he was the author of the strip and watterson was only his pen-name. i was disappointed when i found out the truth but even before that i was surprised at his knowledge of english!

have bunches of the treasuries and i appreciate wattersons beliefs in not selling the strip off to advertisers and commercializing them as has happened with so many other strips. i don't think i can handle hearing calvins voice, all the colorful and whimsical representations of sounds replaced by stock audioclips, seeing the issue of hobbes' reality settled by a doll manufacturer and having the mystery of the noodle incident settled, i'd like my versions better.

i like mutts too. the sweet style that reminds me of western calligraphy and it's innocence.
