my friend says when he is touched in many places on his body, he tastes a metallic taste in his mouth.

is this common?

i wonder if there's any way to transform this into either tasting nothing or tasting something more yummy than metal. hypnosis? neurolinguistic programming?

any suggestions, techniques, advice?

he's really affectionate and wants to be touched and to touch, hug, cuddle, etc. but he often responds with a level of momentary aversion due to the taste.

thanks

It sounds like synthesia. Taste from touch. Experiencing a sense from another sense. I used to get the taste of cigarettes in my mouth when people mentioned smoking. Oh dear, there it is again. UGH!
I'm really not sure how to fix it.

Yeah, like Pensieve said, it sounds like synaesthesia. Everything I've read, and my personal experience, says that the associations are involuntary. I have no idea if this would actually work, but maybe if he made physical contact with people while holding something that he liked the taste of in his mouth, his brain would make a new association?

Are you sure he means the TASTE of metal exactly, and not the SENSATION - an uncomfortable, electrical, foil-chewing sensation? I get that sensation in my mouth if I'm feeling highly sensitive and someone touches some parts of my body. If this person is extremely sensitive to touch it could be that - not synaesthesia exactly ... something different.

I have a metallic taste in my mouth from time to time. I find that it helps to chew gum. Other than that, I thrive on touch.

thanks everyone.
he said metallic taste but it could be the electrical metallic feeling. i will try to get more details.
this friend craves touch, hugs, etc...but sometimes he just can't handle it even though he wants it. appreciate your replies.

I used to put horse bits in my mouth to see if they were truely humane as people say they are. I never found it very humane or tasty. I used to crave the taste of metal and would lick faucets and table legs. I suspect it was a zinc or iron defficency. From what the original poster said, it sounds like synastasia.
