KOLKATA: A young couple committed suicide in West Bengal after they were rebuked by the man's father for borrowing Rs 8 to meet a deficit for buying a garment.

News reports said on Tuesday said 22-year-old daily labourer Raju Patra and his 19-year-old wife Panchami consumed poison Sunday night after Raju's father Indranath pulled them up for taking the loan.

The incident occurred in Ponan village in East Midnapore district, about 100 km from here.


Rs. 8 is worth about 15¢ in the US, 20¢ in Canada, 10p in Britain and around 25c in Australia.

Not worth committing suicide over really is it?

They didn't kill themselves for the money, obviously, but for the shame the father heaped on them.

If you're already suicidal then it doesn't take much....
