Some guy asked me if I was going to prom, and I rolled my eyes. I hate those subtle insults.

Yeah, people always ask me sarcastically, who I am going to prom with. They still expect an answer nonetheless, and the whole class hears the question, so they expect one too. Unfortuently for me, I don't have a date, going with friends.

On this year's prom: Veni, Vedi, it was kinda meh-ish.

Proms are grossly overrated. Cheap perfume, awful hiphop, and strobing lights make it a sensory nightmare for the average aspie (I spent most of my time in the restroom as it was the only well-lit room). Avoid them.

Prom is tomarrow night. Nobody will shut-up about it. Most people said that they weren't going before, so that would have been okay if I didn't, but now everybody is going. Except me.

Meh... I'm probably going to get held back anyway, so I'll get another shot.

I went to my prom. I went with a girl friend from another school, and it was an awesome time. One of the best nights I've had.

It was a night to be normal and feel like an NT.

I do NOT recommend going to a prom or other formal without a date. Those are lousy evenings, because nobody will dance with you.

We don't have 'proms' here but we do have 'formals' which are probably similar. Also, I don't know if this is the case universally, but at my school nobody was expected to go with a date, although they were certainly free to do so if they wished. The majority of people went with a group of friends.

I went to my formal, it wasn't that great and I knew it wasn't going to be. They're pretty boring affairs; we had more fun afterwards when we went over to a mate's house for the night. Too much noise and too much 'structured socialising', even for my NT friends. The music was up so loud nobody could have a conversation without yelling. Awful.

I crashed prom, and then got kicked out after 30 minutes. The huge hat I was wearing might have tipped them off...


On bringing a date-

So nobody will dance with you if you don't have a date? That's fine with me, as 'dancing' wasn't so much that as wiggling inside a massive pile of people throbbing on the floor. No, some people might like the clothes-on orgy angle, but not me.

I have to admit I enjoy hearing from others at my school about crazy prom experiences though--I always want to hear who showed up drunk or stoned, or if anybody came in with a chainsaw, or if zombies invaded the dance floor or guys drove limmo go carts in and the dance devolved into a high-speed chase between two dudes wanting the same girl, who soon slit wrists anyway at seeing them fight, etc.

That sounds pretty mundane.

I didn't go to my prom, mainly because I couldn't find a date (surprise surprise ), but when I broke down the costs, realized what a waste of money it could have been.

In fact, here's a cost breakdown for a guy. (All costs are approximate.)

Conditions:
Traditional "guy-pays-for-everything" attitude is assumed.
The pre-prom dinner is a five-course meal at a high-end restaurant.
Preparation includes haircuts, dry-cleaning, etc.
The cost for the after-prom is budgeted for party-related expenses.
Miscellaneous expenses include flowers, a coursage, etc.
No hotel room is rented on prom night (hint hint).

Costs:
Limo --------------- $100/hr * 3hrs = $300
Tuxedo ------------ $100 rental = $100
Prom tickets ------ $ 75 * 2 = $150
Pre-prom Dinner - $200 (for 2) = $200
After-prom Party - $ 50 = $ 50
Preparation ------- $150 = $150
Miscellaneous ---- $ 50 = $ 50
Total Damage = $1000

With costs skyrocketing that high, may I point out that there are vacation packages for seven days in a four-star all-inclusive hotel that costs only $800? What's a better deal, you may ask? I'll leave the answer to you.

Then again, if you're going to the prom for the same reason the people on American Pie went there, it would be cheaper and a lot simpler to just get an escort, assuming you're over 18. A middle-of-the-road agency (not upscale) is used as an example. The bus fare is average for U.S. cities.
Here's how a breakdown of costs would look like.
Donation ---------------- $300/hr = $300 (another way of saying "rate")
Tip ----------------------- $ 20 = $ 20 (tipping not required, but it helps)
Bus Fare (round-trip) -- $ 4 = $ 4 (don't need a limo for this one)
Bottle of Water --------- $ 1 = $ 1 (trust me, you WILL get thirsty)
Total Damage = $325

Now, which is a better deal? 'Nuff said.

Pre-prom dinner? After-prom party? Coursage? What are these things?

A pre-prom dinner is a meal at a fancy restaurant with your date. Given the importance most people attach to a prom, the expectation is to splurge. So prepare to spend $200 for two people, since such a dinner typically includes one or more appetizers, a salad, an entree, dessert, and coffee.

An after-prom party is a party with your friends or people from your graduating class; it takes place after the official prom is over, and everyone pitches in, $20 to $50 per person. In some cases, people rent rooms in a five-star hotel to have the party. The "after-prom party" can also mean spending the night in a hotel room (hint hint), although not in the example I'm using.

A coursage is a wearable prom decoration, pretty much. It looks like a bracelet, and has flowers wrapped around it. A guy is expected to give one to his date (or put one on her, to be exact) at the beginning of the prom. It generally costs from $10 to $40 apiece. Despite adding to the hassle of the prom in general, coursages look pretty nice.

this is true. but at my prom there were quiet areas we could go and talk to each other. i mostly stayed with my friends in those areas. i thought that was fun but i wouldn't have spent 300$ on it. i didn't know some proms cost that much
