OK, so I have this obsession of changing my hair color.
{Darker shade of brown or perhaps red, BTW}

Last night on the news, I saw a report on how
some users of hair coloring-treatments, to sound proper,
broke out in allergic reactions.

So, if you have changed your hair color, or want to,
do you know any hair-coloring treatments that are safe?

Let a professional hair stylist do it, someone that went to school to learn how.

Agreed. There are non-chemical ways of dying your hair, but I wouldn't exactly call them effective. A professional can gauge based on your hair color and type what should and shouldn't be used on your hair.

you can use henna products to dye your hair red/brown. Or just do a test patch of normal dyes (like they recommend) to make sure you arent allergic first

Henna ink, huh?

About those test patches, will I find any at my neighborhood grocery store?

I use Splat all the time and never had any problems.

I go to the hairdresser once a month for a cut and color. If I tried to do it myself, I'd look like a calico cat, assuming I didn't burn my scalp first.

I used some drugstore products for bleaching when I was a teenager and then used some coloured hair gels. As for actually bleaching and dying my hair bright funky colours; I've only had it done professionally. But at $100-150/cut & colour it's rather expensive.

Maybe see what professional brands are used in salons near you and then buy what they use and DIY?

I think allergic reactions to drug store stuff is rare. Just don't buy some strangely labelled dollar store product that looks like it was made in a Chinese basement or something. There are many mainstream reputable brands if you don't have the budget to pay a pro.
