I wouldn't say it's the best, but one of the most helpful inventions in my life is the smart phone. Smart phones are like having a mini pocket sized computer everywhere you go. I love the GPS and the internet

The iPod Shuffle, because trying to go outside and run with a CD player is a typically unpleasant experience.

The WrongPlanet website was a pretty good invention. My mood has improved, a lot since I've started posting regularly last September, after keeping a very low profile, since the September of 2008.

I do believe fire was not an invention.

Who knows? The electric motor?

Not fire alone maybe, but using it to human benefit?

Funny, this thread has 2 things listed that I purposely removed from my car, one in perfect working order and the other probably missing a sensor!

Obviously the invention of ways to harness energy are the most important because without energy more complicated inventions cannot be used. However more advanced inventions are the ones worth noting. I nominate camshafts. The wonderful spinning shafts which tell your engine when to open and close it's valves. They have been around forever and any sane person wanting a simple engine will always want one. My runners up include aluminum heads, distributors and turbochargers.

I have to agree that firearms have been one of the most influential inventions.

For relatively modern inventions, I'd have to go with these two: the diode and triode, invented in 1904 and 1906, respectively. They launched the field of electronics. All your cell phones, computers, and i-stuff can bow down to these primitive electronic devices that they descended from.
