Yeah, I was reading about that earlier. I read that it was supposed to be felt over most the country. I wonder how they're doing there.

To everyone in that area: hope you are all okay.

Take care, all of you.

I felt the earthquake in Wellington 200 miles away about 4.30 am this morning. There's lots of damage to central Christchurch and surroundings, but luckily not many people hurt. They are still getting lots of aftershocks which you can follow at http://twitter.com/nz_quake

didn't feel it in Auckland. Heard there was an aftershock only an hour and a half ago.

I didn't feel it in Auckland either. I think Hale Bopp lives in the North Island too.

(yes I know i am on hiatus).

I am 500km away from the earthquake, apparently houses were shaking in the town nearby but I slept right through it... I am told we are in an area that is on a different set of faultlines so we were buffered from it.... however my brother's girlfriend is half an hour away and she was woken by her house shaking... she was quite peturbed...

I have relatives in ChCh, but they are okay. I find it impressive that there have been minimal injuries when compared to some of the other recent earthquakes around the world

Very lucky with the time of day it hit, if you've seen the photos there's crushed cars and buildings with collapsed floors, amazing no one was killed. Friends of ours had both chimneys come down, and another set of friends have a house you can walk through gaps in the exterior walls now.
I slept through it here in wgtn, although apparently the house was shaking.

+1.

I heard on the radio that a state of emergency had been declared in Christchurch as well, but largely as a preventative to stop people being hurt by rubble and stuff. Hope everyone out there is ok. Christchurch is a nice city.

Wellington is about 500km away so would have felt some tremors but otherwise are not affected. Hale_Bopp is not living in Christchurch and neither is Mr Bogan, so it seems that all WP people are ok... there is a guy who lives in Christchurch, but I saw a couple of his posts yesterday so he is well, though I think people there are likely quite shaken, and they are still assessing damage to buildings and the infrastructure of the city... also there is a lot of rain coming...

Alyson of AS Planet is near there but I read a few of her messages on Facebook this morning, she is OK.
