Quote:
About 1 percent to 4 percent of DNA in modern people from Europe and Asia was inherited from Neandertals, researchers report in the May 7 Science. “It’s a small, but very real proportion of our ancestry,” says study coauthor David Reich of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, Mass.

Quote:
“Neandertals are not totally extinct; they live on in some of us,” says Svante Pääbo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and leader of the Neandertal genome project.

Quote:
But some parts of the human genome clearly do produce an evolutionary advantage, the researchers say. Again, the team compared the human genome to those of Neandertals and chimpanzees and identified places where humans differ. If nothing of importance had happened in human evolution since humans and Neandertals diverged, such changes would be spread evenly across the genome, Green says. Instead, the researchers found large swaths of the genome where humans have distinct changes not found in Neandertals or chimpanzees. The team identified 212 such regions where “selective sweeps” were likely to have happened, many of which include genes involved in brain function. The researchers don’t yet know what the changes are or how they produce a selective advantage.

so you see, wavefreak58, i have no idea what the first sentence means. they could mean 1 to 4 % of people carry some neanderthal DNA, or 1 to 4 % of our genome is of neanderthal heritage. but i lean towards the first one as interbreeding is not something that will affect all of the population.

The Neanderthal theory of Autism is pseudoscience.

It is very interesting IMO and applies to people with ADHD as well.

Red hair is trait inherited from Neanderthals and is also more prevalent among people with autism and ADHD.

It is, but you never know. Might have some truth to it.

I think it's just a neurological aberration.... which doesn't sound any nicer than being compared to a neanderthal.

IMO, when discussing empirical issues, what matters is the evidence. I would simply say that Autism is a neurological "difference." The term "aberration" places a negative judgment on it.

surely the evidence won't be found by people already doubting the theory

In the scientific method, evidence requires doubt. Otherwise, one's research will simply confirm one's expectations.

Sounds more plausible than most autism theories.

Yes, that is where the Neanderthal "theory" comes from. Even if it sounds wonderful, it is still pseudoscientific.

Few things are as credible as the people that didn't get the outcome they thought they would.

took me another cup of coffee to get it but yes of course you're right, what i meant is: you have to have at least enough faith in the theory to start researching it in the first place, but if you look at the link i posted before, the people who found the proof of interbreeding between cro magnons and neanderthals were not convinced in the beginning.
to be honest i am not sure how they came to researching it in the first place if that is the case. i suspect they all kept their faith secret until the end :D just to seem more credible....
i wish i had the means to research this instead of just talking about it on my computer. Being a stay at home mum is going to complicate my research i suspect :D

From National Geographics:

According to a new DNA study, most humans have a little Neanderthal in them—at least 1 to 4 percent of a person's genetic makeup.

One what genetic evidence to do you based that. We have not been able to sequence the Neanderthal genome because very little of the Neanderthal DNA has survived in the bone samples found.

Someone should write a fiction novel about how the Neanderthals mysterious disappearance, explaining that Aliens actually came to earth and recognizing the potential of this subspecies, chose to collaborate with them. In time, most of them were taken to another planet, as this one with its "Neurotypical" barbarians was being inhospitable. On another planet, they have patiently built a new civilization, but its time they return and demonstrate to these Homo sapien rats, I mean Fiends, true justice.

The Neanderthal Theory of Autism is the best evidence that I have ever seen for a fundamentally romantic streak amongst people with autistic spectrum disorders.
