In France, among baby names forbidden by law courts, there was :
- Saddam Hussein (given to babies born during the 1st Gulf War)
- Megane : I know it's an English or American name, but in France this was unknown until a car brand used it to name one of its models, and giving a commercial name to a kid isn't well perceived by French authorities

It's an old-fashioned French name.

Megan is a common name in the US and England. Megane can be an alternative spelling. If it's spelled that way, though, it pretty much is because of the car.I can imagine it would seem even more tasteless in France if your surname is Renault.

I knew Claudette was an old French name. I think, consequently it's a Louisiana Creole name. I imagine Claudette to be wilting on a verandah of one of those big 19th century houses, drinking a mint julep.

The case is famous in France, because the parents are called "Renault". But they learned that the Renault firm will call "Mégane" its next model when the mother was pregnant and the name was already chosen !

My best friend went to school with a Scholastica and another friend had a schoolmate called Candida.

I live in South Africa so you run into a lot of people calling themselves something like "Joyful", "Princess" or even some variation on "Boy" or "Girl" who are just translating their name from their home language into English (that kind of translation's more common in the older generation, most people these days just use their real name).

A lot of very upright Afrikaans men also go through life called exclusively by bizarre-sounding nicknames because traditionally they hand down a limited number of first names from grandfather to grandson, and wind up with too many Johans or whatever. But Afrikaners follow European naming conventions and will always have a standard-issue legal name if asked, so this story counts as egregious:

My Afrikaans friend went to a party to meet her husband's new stepbrother, his girlfriend and their terrible-toddler son LJ. They struck her as relatively crazy, but while she was making conversation she asked the mom what "LJ" stood for.
"Love-and-Jealousy," said the mom, fixing her with crazy eyes (I'm translating, but same initials either way).
My friend, thinking this was a joke, laughed, at which the mom got really crazy. "It is!" she cried. "Because I am love, and my man is jealousy!"

Poor kid doesn't stand a chance.

There's names that are Unique or Unusual...

Stupid's a whole other category.

Like "Bus Shelter 13" - actually given to a boy in my country. There was a fuss made on the News about it a couple of years ago.

My parents named me "Roland" because I rolled sideways alot in my crib as an infant. Don't know why they didn't take me to a doctor about that :? I would have preferred "Ronald", then at least they'd call me Ronny instead of Roly. :o

I have been thinking on this. Azuba was my first thought for a name. I was also thinking of Sale or Rent, because everything would be "For Sale" or "For Rent." (Maybe pronounce Sale "Sally.") I was also thinking of some random name like "Jshdsknsdleedsddf" but have it pronounced Steve or some other common name. The future mother of my children will most likely have a say in naming them. Good luck naming your kid "Garlic" or "Rainbow Toilet III (The Revenge)."

There was a semi-famous person whose parents were thinking of calling their baby "Sky," but it turned out to be a boy instead so they chose another name. That list idea is a good idea, but it would have to be pretty long, and they'd have to update it for the changing times. Also the rare names are good for picking your email address (like the cyal part in my username). There probably isn't an email such as [email protected].

Maybe eventually names like Josh or John would pass out and names that we would think are weird now will get more common. Anybody for Hezekiah, Abigail, or Richard anymore?

Focker is a name. There is an aircraft company called Focker.

Then again there is a Jewish name "Schitlips" How would you like to be named "Sadie Schitlips"?

John Wayne was born "Marion Robert Morrison"

There was an old TV show where they wanted to make a guy look like a wimp so they called him "Melvin Beanblossem"

Seriously, would you rather grow up with the name "Melvin Beanblossem" or "Clint Eastwood" or "Rock Hudson"?

Lol. Candida and her siblings Aspergillus, Streptococcus and Gonorrhea

In PL we can choose only names from the list. Sometimes I think it's really good. People try to give names like Courtesan or Television and they can't.
