I usually stim when anxious, happy, or stressed, but sometimes I catch myself sitting at the computer and rocking.

I was told cats purr when happy and relaxed, but also when stressed - maybe sick or dying. It helps them relax I think.

I stim when relaxed, especially rocking. It is true that it is generally viewed as anxiety by others. I think maybe NTs see it that way because why would you be doing something so "strange" if you were ok? I stim A LOT when my mind is completely occupied by just one thing, and being able to have my mind a little quieter than usual is very relaxing for me.

I stim when I am both overwhelmed thinking about something and when I want to focus on a single thing.
So it works as both a focusing aid and a calming agent.
