Hmmm, that would probably look alot like a live-fire re-enactment of Kent State- just replace national guardsmen with rednecks. :lol:

I'm afraid the "conservatives" and "liberals" in this country would probably join forces to vanquish the libertarians. The so called conservatives and liberals in this country aren't much different from each other.

@OP

"Libertarian" in the original sense of the word ("libertarian socialist"), or in it's modern connotation of a supporter of some form of corporate neo-feudalism?

Libertarians support fiscal conservatism alongside social liberalism. Comedian Drew Carey puts it best: "Conservatives who still get high."

They aren't socialists, and completely oppose any sort of welfare state.

I'm refering to the way the term was coined in the 1850s.

Not true, actually... they have won some seats in state legislatures and muncipal elections. But still nothing major.

American politics really amuse me, because everyone is always talking about how they want change, yet they go and vote for the same old two parties again and again, and until truly independent thinkers like Bob Barr or even maybe Ron Paul are elected, things will stay the same-- out-of-control spending, cronyism, and broken promises about health care and education reform and balancing the budget.

The so-called "Tea Party" showed some promise, but it has already been hijacked by Republicans. If they didn't pepper their rallies with religion, and kept out people like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin I would support them.

Ironically, America is, in theory, ripe for third-party movements and independent politics, and it's not our political system that's preventing it-- it's human nature. People are drawn to large factions and they don't think for themselves even if they say they do. The two-party stranglehold on American politics could falter easily if people would unite against it.

Election of an independent to a prominent office can happen, like with Jesse Ventura in Minnesota. But I don't think it will anytime soon unless someone really good comes along with strong leadership qualities. I'd say the chances in the foreseeable future of a third party or unaffiliated candidate rising in America are virtually zero.

Yes. Libertarians are all about economic freedom. They want to make sure everyone is free to starve on the street.

I am strongly opposed to militarism and violence of any type. But to be honest, I view taxation as necessary. Especially for the rich--no one needs to be making millions of dollars per year. That money would be better spent on health care, education, and social programs. Of course, if the USA cut military funding they could probably lower taxes and increase social services at the same time.

So would you rather speak Chinese or be subject to sharia law? Do you think the incompetence and corruption of the blue helmet mafia would save you? There is a very practical reason why we have a huge military with a huge budget.

Libertarians aren't anarchists. I'd much rather reform education and social welfare than throw more money at it. Whoever is able bodied and mentally functional should be put on workfare instead of welfare Education is fundamentally a complete joke and the whole system needs to be reformed. So what if no one "needs" to be making millions? Why are they less deserving of the fruits of their own labour than anyone else? One thing I differ from most libertarians on is that I am militarist to an extent. If another country has a tyrannical government, wipe it out. If it's a pissing contest between two nations, let em sort it out themselves.
