According to the census data, they island I live on has a population of about 22,00 people. Now I don't have *quite* enough ammo on hand to deal with that many zombies if they all turned, I certainly have enough to handle a goodly chunk of them. I live near the only bridge onto the island so blowing it would be a top priority to keep down the total number necessary to deal with. After that was taken care of, I'd probably silence some of my weapons and see about linking up with some of the other armed islanders I know through the shooting club and set about clearing out any lingering undead. All in all I think I'm pretty well situated for this type of emergency, the island geography works to my advantage in limiting the numbers I'd have to contend with, I have a 3 story house with a commanding view of the area, and our tenuous power situation means the island is loaded with generators and other survival gear. Of course being a heavily armed gunsmith with a machine shop in my basement doesn't hurt either... :D

What about somehow luring some of the across the bridge to the mainland first before blowing up the bridge?

Bridges and blowing them up is a false security. Zombies, by definition, are dead. They do not breathe. They can easily just fall into a gorge or a river or the ocean for all we know and simply walk across to the other side.

Fire is your friend. A plan for corraling, trapping and incinerating large numbers of zombies is a wise preplanning investment. As a weaponsmith, I'm hoping that flamethrower is in your skill set! Taking out large numbers with an economy of bullets is a viable, if somewhat risky strategy. Conserve firepower for dire situations. We can only hope that zombies do turn out to be attracted to sound - this would make luring vast numbers into a single area much easier. The last thing you want to do is torch the undead in a random manner and have them wander aimlessly starting secondary fires until they finally lose mobility.

Now, the effect of predators on the undead is an unknown. If you are on an island (I'm picturing a wooded natural retreat sort of deal) and the local bear/wolf/puma/coyote population takes advantage of the easy meal will zombie predators also be a threat? In sufficient numbers zombies could overwhelm an animal population but predators are much more wiley than that. Zombies crossing from the mainland through ocean waters - would sharks take advantage of that? This is one of the great unknowns and potentially lethal side effects that really needs to be accounted for in ZA preparations. Until the viability of cross species infection is confirmed or discounted - it really is prudent to plan for the 'what if'.

Also, don't allow island life to make you complacent. The random possibility of an undead water crossing could take a complacent island population totally but surprise and wreak havoc. Even if you haven't seen a zombie in months - stay vigilant. Remain ensconced within a barrier fence of some sort at night, employ dogs as early warning systems. Relax in the blissful island atmosphere but don't abandon yourself to it or you may find yourself dead.
