no this isnt a disguised nice guys thread if u read my first and 2nd posts u will understand but like they said my views of the past are "romantisized" so i probably belong more in a mideval video game then the past

I did read your first post...which is why I have the impression this is a 'nice guys' thread. All you talk about is how 'other' guys these days treat women poorly. Sounds like the 'nice guy' lament to me.

But I guess I should have expected this in the Love and Dating section. If it were a true 'wrong time period' thread, it would be in a different section, where people would talk about sailing ships, cowboys, following Marco Polo along the silk road, or debating with Seneca.

Edit: On that note, I'm going out for a beer.

well then how do u change the tidle? i wouldnt want to be missleading anyone and yes mabey i am a nice guy but i prefer to be called old fasion and i do see myself out of place in sociaty. i beleive i should have ben a knight with a huge claymore that cleaved through hundreds of enemys to save a beautiful princess. so i guess my view of the past is based on a video game and inaccurate so mabey the tidle should be (Ever feel like u should be the hero in a video game?) would that be more accurate?

Here's the thing. We can fantasize about these sorts of things -- I do it, and actually make a modest living doing it -- but dwelling on it is dangerous. Just like nostalgia is dangerous. Walter Mitty dangerous. If you haven't read this short story, I recommend it: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I read this cautionary tale when I was young, and it has had a profound impact on my life.

My main complaint with the direction of this thread is that it focuses on this ineffectual sort of Mitty fantasy, rather than the fun fantasy I thought it would explore. But since it isn't, no need to apologize for that.

I have always felt that I was born in the wrong era. I don't identify with my (gen Y) generation at all.

If I would've been in high school in either the mid to late 50s or early 60s or the 90s I would've been golden!

At times, yes, I do; considering how I act compared to my peers at times.....but, then I remember, how many advances there has been for racial equality, and I'm sort of glad that I wasn't alive into the 1960s, or even the 70s, considering I'm a black male residing the Southern Region of the U.S., and all of those Civil Rights issues that occured throughout that era :hmph:

Women have ALWAYS been treated poorly by men. Have you ever read Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew? Check out this quote from Kate at the end:

Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labour both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe,
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks, and true obedience,
Too little payment for so great a debt.
. . .
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown;
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband’s foot,
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready, may it do him ease.

That's basically saying that a woman's husband is her superior, her caretaker, etcetera, and that a woman as supposed to do whatever her husband tells her to do, in addition to providing him with "love, fair looks, and true obedience." She says that's a very small payment for such a great debt. Does that sound like the way woman should be treated?

Before the 1900s, women in America could not vote, go to college, play sports, or participate in the miltary. Rape wasn't considered a big deal back then either. And this topic is supposed to prove that women were treated BETTER centuries ago?

If you guys haven't seen Midnight in Paris yet, I would strongly recommend it. The theme of that movie is basically the theme of this thread, imagining what life would be if you lived in a different time. To the original poster, that movie is perfect for you right now. I'm not going to give away anything, but I think it will answer a lot of your questions.

Not if you turn the clock back far enuf. Anthropologists suspect that many ancient hunter-gatherer societies and even agricultural societies had matriarchal structures. For example, in a lot of Chinese tombs it's the women who were buried most elaborately with the most valuables, right up until the advent of militarized weapons, which I'm guessing must have been around the Xia Dynasty ~2000 BCE (It's been a while since I took that class so I might have the details all wrong). The point I'm getting to is that patriarchal oppression only spans "recent" recorded history, and can be attributed to militarism. Once armies start fighting, suddenly everyone has to take orders from the male warlord if they want to win, and pretty soon you've got a chain of command that refuses to go away, unless it gets overthrown ... by an equally unfair male-dominated system of invaders *face-palm*.

I certainly hope things shift back toward gender equality in future centuries, but it's hard to tell — so many variables. I don't want to open that proverbial can of worms right now.

No. No matter how out of place I feel, this is my time.

The music of this time is ripe for a revolution. :P Though in some genres, that's already happening.

For me it is not when I was born but where. I wish I was born and raised in a rural area. The city and suburbs stink.

Oh my god, yes! 150 years earlier, and all my useless abilities would have made me an elite con-artist. Faking dialects, picking up languages, a good memory, all these things that are useless today would have been so incredibly useful to cheat myself to fortune. Remember Victor Lustig, that guy that sold the Eiffel tower? I guess I would have played in that league. Most his ten commandments for con men.. hey, that's basically how I get through most social situations.

Heh, I understand you completely. I didn't think anyone else had come to the same conclusion that I have. The world is going down the drain, chivalrous relationships with it. In America, only 31.5% of the population gets and stays married, which doesn't include the stat of whather or not that 31.5% are actually happy. What we need is to go back to chivalry in the relationship department, while keeping our modern understandings, such as respecting women as equals and allowing them to pursue their own dreams like successful careers and what-not. I think that's not very probable, though. Things will only get worse, assuming civilization even survives this century.

Yes. I have often wanted to be born around 1865. When I am a child the west would be just being explored, and then I'd see the industrial revolution, the electrification of America, radio, the movies, the '27 Yankees, human powered flight, and the first(and if I lived long enough)and the second world war. It would have been a wonderful time to be alive.

English isn't my mothers language too, but the way you write makes me laugh when you talk about honor.

Whatever, I think that the time I'm born in is exactly the right one. It's the invention of the computer and the internet that gives me the liberties I need to exist. In this case I don't mean women. But look at the world! Women are in the much better situation in many countries. The old times still bring men to share their money with them and give them a home without expecting any payment and on the other hand the new times give them the same liberties every human should have in the same way. Where I live they don't even have to care for their children because they give them away in the morning and get them back in the evening. And for the time before the children are old enough to go to kindergarten (2 years) the state gives them money for staying at home with them.

Honor leads to weakness if theres no sense in it. And getting raped by justice volunteerly doesn't make sense. Or tell me why a man should be forced to donate half of his money or financial worth to a woman if they get divorced. Not the other way. Only men.
But who cares... ^^

I wish I lived in the age of the great mother, before the invention of war.
It feels so natural to hunt and gather for supplies needed and life was simple. I wish I lived back then.

I'd like to live in a period where people do not try to constantly coerce you into romantic relationships if you are not looking.
I'd understand if I were always complaining about not having someone.
But I never do.
Yet the majority of people I know personally feel as if I'd be "happy" if i were in a relationship or married.
And its funny because the main ones pushing are the main ones complaining about their current relationships.

At work I can only avoid it for the part of the day I get to work alone in the satellite office.
Even though i smile and ignore them i cannot stop them from talking.

Yes I feel I should have been born in the 1990s when Asperger syndrome was more known about rather than in the 1960s when doctors accused me of having brain damage and recommended I be institutionalised (deported to a concentration camp) which was common because Asperger syndrome was not known outside the German speaking world. In mainstream schools no teaching assistants helping me being treated like I was a (sorry I cant say the word it's racist). Autistic children and those with ADHD being thought of as 'naughty' who needed more discipline. Yet everyone else, children with learning disabilities and or terminal illnesses get free holidays to the USA and used for inspiration porn but I am grateful I am not used as inspiration porn. Having to go into learning disability schools/nurseries from 1969-77. And they called the 1960s permissive and a counterculture I saw as hypocrisy.
