Must I Godwin? This scenario already happened and it's the reason why the term "Aspergers Syndrome" exists in the first place. Hans Asperger had a number of autistic children in his clinical care and he saved them from being killed by the Nazis mainly by using their technical special interests as a selling point. Were this to happen today under a similar regime, a similar thing would probably happen (for some, and clearly not for others, as surely happened in Germany too). To some extent that strategy is already being explored as people argue against the development of prenatal screening on the grounds that future Einsteins might be screened out.

I can't let this go without pointing out that almost every dictatorship ever was capitalist.

this.

And if we were ever to live under a dictatorship that would perform genocide then the loss of autistic people would be the least of my worries, because if such a regime were to be in palce it's mostly going to be NT's dying for being pinko's, peasants and shop owners.

Errr... Would you care to name some? You realize government ownership of resources contradicts capitalism, right?

No, capitalism is when the means of production are operated for profit (as opposed to utility).

hence there is statist non market capitalism called "corporatism" or "fascism" and there is in the reverse: non state socialism (called "libertarian socialism" or "anarchism"), there is also market socialism, the defining difference is how the means of production are managed, for profit or utility? But if you wanna be more technical about it who controls the means of production - the majority or minority - also matters.

That means any economic framework operated for the profit of "capitalists" is "capitalism".

That's just economics 101

oh, and a word in dictators, if we accept that capitalism is a "for profit" economic system that it operated by a minority, then if you can think of a dictatorship it's probably capitalistic. and you will be hard pressed to meet a socialist who beleive the uSSr was actually socialist.

on second thought, I'm just way to unstable at the moment to have the fortitude to debate something like this, so i wont be replying. Sorry, I just can't do it.

You're playing on the ambiguity of the term 'capitalism'. No one that supports capitalism supports corporatism. Advocates of capitalism are almost exclusively supporters of laissez-faire capitalism. This misunderstanding of the term has caused so many problems. People that are opposed to a coalition between government and big business end up opposing free trade because they are incapable of differentiating between "state-capitalism" and true capitalism.

If you're talking about corporatism, fine. But that is not how I or others that support free trade define capitalism. And you're still yet to give me an example.

I can't see autistic genocide happening.

What I can see, at least in USA, is some company inventing a drug or gene therapy to "cure" Autism and then convincing Congress to pass a law making the drug or therapy mandatory for the autistic child to attend/continue attending school. The excuse would be that it would cut down on costs for education. If a family does not comply the child will be taken away and the parent(s) fined and/or incarcerated.

It would also be required by employers and higher educational institutions for adults who are diagnosed.

Your math is wrong - almost all defenders of capitalism (from social-democrats on the left, to christian-democrats, nationalists and old-style conservatives on the right) are against laissez-faire capitalism.

Edward Abbey:

Quote:
If you refuse to pay unjust taxes, your property will be confiscated. If you attempt to defend your property, you will be arrested. If you resist arrest, you will be clubbed. If you defend yourself against clubbing, you will be shot dead. These procedures are known as the Rule of Law.

Replace "pay unjust taxes" for "be treated"; and "your property will be confiscated. If you attempt to defend your property, you will be arrested. " for "you will subject to compulsory treatment".

In a situation like that, I would just take the cure.

I would probably take the cure. I might not recognize the person who came out, but being a person with even some of my memories would be better than being dead.
