If his wives couldn't trust him, we can't trust him. If he can't keep his word to his own wives--we can't trust him to keep his word to the American people. Keeping one's word to one's wife is much more important than any political promise.

He didn't have grandchildren then, he has grandchildren now, he entered this because he is worried about the future of his grandkids.
Having grandchildren often gives people a different perspective on things.
